ORION TOWNSHIP HOLDS RIBBON CUTTING
FOR THE BROWN & JOSLYN ROAD GATEWAY BEAUTIFICATION
What: Orion Township holds ribbon cutting event in celebration of the completion of the gateway beautification project at the corner of Brown and Joslyn Roads.
Who: The public is invited and encouraged to attend this event.
When: Thursday, October 6, 2022

Parking is available at Lake Orion Roofing (881 Brown Road) and Tommy’s Car Wash/Mattress Firm (861 Brown Road)
Why: Orion Township Supervisor Chris Barnett, Township Trustees, and the Corridor Improvement Authority Board are excited to extend this invitation to the community so we may celebrate together the beautification of the Brown and Joslyn Road gateway.
Earlier this year, the Township was awarded a $25,000 grant from CN, in partnership with America in Bloom, through their EcoConnexions From the Ground Up program. This program was established to provide matching grant funding to green communities where CN operates. The Township’s project was to transform the existing brush and overgrowth at the Brown and Joslyn Roads gateway to enhanced landscaping with native, low-maintenance evergreens and floral plants. Additionally, a gateway sign that is reflective of the community’s brand and image is being commissioned for installation later this year.
The beautification of the eastern border of the CIA has been a priority of the CIA Board and has been in development since the initial planning phases of the CIA Development & Tax Increment Financing Plan in 2015. Off to a positive start, the CIA has seen the completion of the Brown Road widening and improvement project, Baldwin Road streetscape project, and the
development of a Menards, Checker’s restaurant, Tommy’s car wash, and residential townhome development. Currently under construction are a Mattress Firm, the Hyatt House Hotel, and the Grand Square of Orion which will feature three hotels, a Culver’s restaurant, and a Texas Roadhouse.
The beautification of the southeast gateway into Orion Township and the Corridor Improvement Authority will finish a major milestone for the community and ensure the existing environmental degradation of the site from litter and roadway debris is regularly cleaned. The intersection will be a showcase reflective of the community’s environmental stewardship and hometown pride.

Hadley, MI –The FARM HOP is returning for a second year on September17th! This event is
designed for families, history buffs and those who simply want to revisit old America. Equipped
with a map, guests on this self-guided tour will enjoy an engaging perspective of local properties
integral to the agricultural heritage of the Hadley area. Highlights include a scavenger hunt and
demonstrations. Come and get an up-close look at the farms, barns and historical sites that hold
stories of this community’s past.
Begin your self-driven FARM HOP tour between 10:00 am to 2:00 pm from the Hadley Mill
Museum or Le Fleur Décor Festival in Hadley MI. The FARM HOP STOPS (venues) close at
4:00p.

The FESTIVAL at Le Fleur Décor at 3442 Hadley Road, Hadley MI includes Antiques, Plants,
Art Fair, Music, Food and more and goes from 10:00 to 5:00pm. Admission is free. Look there
for the Historical Society booth.
The HADLEY MILL MUSEUM at 3633 Hadley Road, Hadley MI will be open from 10:00 to
5:00. Admission is free.
New this year is the PORK & PLAID Kick-off event on Friday night, 9/16 from 5-8pm This is a
free community event with live music, activities and of course…wear plaid and bring blankets or
lawn chairs. The first 150 Farm Hop ticket purchased receive two complimentary BBQ meals at
the kick- off. The museum will be open for tours.
FARM HOP TICKETS for the self-guided tour are $20.00/car regardless of the number of
passengers. The number of tickets is limited so purchasing in advance is advised.
Tickets may also be purchased the day of the event at the HADLEY MILL MUSEUM and the
FESTIVAL from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Members of the Hadley Township Historical Society
may purchase tickets for $10/car.

ORION TOWNSHIP RECOGNIZED FOR
ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERSHIP
Orion Township, MI (May 20, 2022) – Orion Township was recognized for environmental leadership by
the statewide Michigan Green Communities program. As part of the 2021 Michigan Green Communities
(MGC) Challenge, 44 participating local governments were awarded gold, silver, or bronze seals of
achievement reflecting community leadership in areas such as energy efficiency, climate adaptation and
resilience, recycling, environmental justice, and more. Ten communities received bronze certification,
twelve received silver certification, and twenty-two received gold certification.
Orion Township achieved gold status for exemplary action in multiple categories, including economic
development, materials management, water protection, and community engagement. A few years ago,
Orion Township, implemented a community-wide garbage and recycling program. The recycling program
included participation in Recyclebank – a rewards points system for recycling. Just for signing up and setting
out recycling each week, residents can earn points to redeem at local stores or donate to the school district
for one of their recycling programs.
The Michigan Green Communities (MGC) program is open to all local governments in Michigan, at no cost.
MGC is a sustainability networking, benchmarking, and technical assistance program. It guides and supports
communities in adapting to a changing climate, protecting infrastructure, improving the quality of life for
residents, and creating a more environmentally and economically sustainable future for the state of
Michigan.
Michigan Green Communities is supported by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and
Energy; the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services; the Michigan Economic Development
Corporation; the Michigan Association of Counties; the Michigan Municipal League; and the Michigan

ONTV Announces the Premiere of New Series
“Ideas and Insights”
Orion Neighborhood Television, Orion’s community access television station, announces the premiere of a new series entitled “Ideas and Insights.” The program will premiere on June 11 at 9 p.m. on Comcast Ch. 10, AT&T U-verse 99 and simulcast at orionONTV.org. The show is produced and hosted by Dr. Badrinath Rao, Associate Professor of Sociology and Asian Studies at Kettering University. In the 8 episode series, Dr. Rao remotely interviews authors and professors from all over world to discuss topics about some of the most pressing issues of our time.
In the premiere episode, Dr. Rao discusses the distressing state of democracy across the globe with John Keane, professor of politics at the University of Sydney in Australia. Prof. Keane offers a seminal analysis of the aberrations of democracy from his latest book, “The New Despotism.” “Ideas and Insights” is like no other program ONTV has produced before,” says Ian Locke, ONTV executive director. “When Dr. Rao approached us with his idea for a program that would challenge viewers to think about the times we are in, we couldn’t say no. This program connects our viewers with leading thinkers of our time from across the globe to inspire us to think about how we interact with, and treat one another. It’s very inspiring and thought provoking.”
The program is produced at ONTV, but will be shared nationwide with other community TV stations. “Meaningful programming isn’t just found on commercial media outlets,” says Locke. “Stations like Orion Neighborhood Television exist to allow the public access to media, to encourage free speech, and the sharing of independent ideas.”
A new episode of “Ideas and Insights” will air weekly on Saturdays at 9 p.m. and include additional air times on Sundays at 9 a.m., Mondays at 9 p.m. and Wednesdays at 5 p.m. on all ONTV media platforms.

Grants to be awarded to children’s based charities by local renowned
fine art portrait studio.
LAKE ORION, MI — Arising Images, a local Lake Orion portrait studio, is offering an opportunity to submit applications for a charitable grant. Organizations must be a 501(c) 3 within 75 miles of the Lake Orion community and provide programs and/or services that focus on children. Multiple grants between $15k-$30k will be awarded.
Locally owned and operated by Prem and Cheridy Mukherjee since 2004, Arising Images is excited to open up this donation opportunity to the many worthy causes in the area. Prem says, “Supporting the mission of the good people doing the good works of providing programs & services to children in the community really aligns with our vision to help kids realize they are valued and important. By capturing their strength and inner beauty through portraits, our goal is always to reinforce their self-worth and build confidence. We also know that the process for applying and obtaining grants can be challenging for smaller charities so we have made the process to apply and be considered very simple. It really just seemed like a great marriage of our values.”
To be considered for a donation, organizations will submit an application on or before the deadline of July 31, 2022. After careful review, finalists will be notified and invited to do a short, in-person presentation at a date/time to be announced.

Friends of the Orion Township Library Gently Used Book Sale

(Lake Orion, Mich.) April 18, 2022 – The Friends of the Orion Township Library will be hosting the Friends Gently Used Book Sale at the library with public days Wednesday, May 18, 2022, through Saturday, May 21, 2022, and exclusive preview to “Friends” members and teachers on Tuesday, May 17, 2022.
“Our Friends book sales are a great place to pick up summer reading material and help the Friends raise funds for our library at the same time,” said Don Walker, president of the Friends of the Orion Township Library. “Donations have continued pouring in, thanks to the generosity of library patrons, and we are well stocked again for the spring sale.” The Friends offer hard cover and soft cover books in over 40 categories, with prices at $1 or less. Cash, credit card, and checks accepted.

The Friends are a 501 (c) 3 non profit organization that was started in 1985 “to promote public support of the Orion Township Public Library and the library in the community, to promote reading, literacy and lifelong learning, and to maintain an association of persons interested in the library.” Friends act in cooperation with the library board and staff, serving as a liaison between the community and library. All money raised by the Friends, except for minimal administrative costs such as postage and printing, is donated directly to the library in the way of program funding, material purchases and monetary contributions.
