District 4 at Davison
OXFORD
Davison
Flint Kearsley
Grand Blanc
Lapeer
PROJECTED MPR: 1. Grand Blanc, 2. Davison.
FAVORITE: Grand Blanc
NEXT: Davison
DARKHORSE: Oxford
PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Taylor Thompson-Grand Blanc.
INSIGHT: This is going to be a tough district for Oxford going back into Genesee County after having an interesting experience last season. The Wildcats whom is one of the favorites in the White have Miranda Wymenkio, Peyton Richter, Kayla Casper, Lily Morris, Brady Elling, and Lexie Yankee coming back for Coach Rachel Bryer. The Saginaw Valley League is one of the most toughest leagues in the state and three of those teams should be solid again. Davison is the host of the district and they bring with them a talented team although depth will be a question mark. The Cardinals should be solid led by Olivia Dirkse and Jasmine Hadley for Coach Craig Hitchcock. Grand Blanc whom won 12 games last season is the favorite in the district. The Bobcats are loaded despite falling to Flushing in the regional semifinals last season. Grand Blanc has Taylor Thompson, Anayah Small, Rachel Gaydos, and Chelsea Bishop coming back for Coach Mike Thomas. Lapeer had a very young team last season but should be improved led by Paige Erla for Coach Mike Butterfield. Flint Kearsley should be interesting as they could be a contender in the Flint Metro League. The Hornets ha a young team last season for Coach Traci Pigott. This district looks to be a three team district but it’s anyone’s to take.
District 5 at Lake Orion
LAKE ORION
ROCHESTER
ADAMS
STONEY CREEK
Romeo
Utica Eisenhower
PROJECTED MPR: 1. Stoney Creek, 2. Lake Orion.
FAVORITE: Stoney Creek
NEXT: Lake Orion
DARKHORSE: Utica Eisenhower
PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Sydney LaPrarie-Stoney Creek.
INSIGHT: This is shaping up to be a very interesting district at Lake Orion. Utica Eisenhower should be interesting to watch in the Macomb Area Red division this season. The Eagles has three solid players in Ava Stack, Jennifer McWerty, and Kaitlyn Woodcox coming back for Coach Clint Piper. Romeo should be interesting to watch in the Macomb Area Conference White. The Bulldogs have Cassidy Banich, Reese Carmondy, Amanda Kitchen, Sarah Ross, Nicole Mazur, and Megan Doyle for Coach Katy Bosheers. Rochester lost a ton of talent from last season but they have always been a solid program. The Falcons have Natalie Rayce, Melina Troy, and Abbey Pleasant coming back for Coach Bill Thurston. Adams which had a coaching change this offseason should be interesting to watch. The Highlanders have Madison Kessman, Abby Drahnak, AnJuyna Howard, Emma Klott, Samantha Blaine, Olivia Marcial, and Abby Skiff coming back for Coach Joe Malburg. Stoney Creek has a ton of proven experience along with Red experience. The Cougars have Sydney LaPrarie, Sarah LaPrarie, Mia Carson, Emily Flynn, Milana Skoric, Riley Binfet, Lily Solek, Ella Demertal, and Paris Kramer for Coach Kellen James. Lake Orion is an interesting team and is one of the favorites in the White. They are also loaded with Maddie Ebbert, Kylie Heck, Chloe Wiegers, Reagan Greene, Olivia Peplowski, and Audrey Wischmeyer for Coach Bob Brydges. The Dragons are without Katie Van Heck as she is out for the season with a torn ACL. This is shaping up for now being a three team district but two in reality but you never know.
District 6 at Waterford Kettering
AVONDALE
CLARKSTON
PONTIAC
Waterford Kettering
Waterford Mott
PROJECTED MPR: 1. Clarkston, 2. Waterford Kettering
FAVORITE: Clarkston
NEXT: Waterford Kettering
DARKHORSE: Avondale
PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Reigan Lawrence-Avondale.
INSIGHT: This district looks to be a mismatch on paper in Waterford. Waterford Kettering is going to be very interesting. The Captains have a ton of experience coming back in Markayla Holland, Amalia Vamvakitis, Savanagh Labo, Malayna Schoof, Graciela Lovett, Ellianna Ball, and Abby Hayward for Coach George Yarberry. Waterford Mott had things very rough but they should be better with more experience. The Corsairs have Makyah Henderson, Abby Trombly, Kelsey Palmer, Madison Winters, among others for Coach Michelle Sklar. Avondale should be very interesting to watch all season long as they could be a contender in the Gold. The Yellow Jackets really struggled last season however they should be better this season despite having major concerns. Avondale has two transfers from Dayton, Ohio along with Reigan Lawrence, and Savannah Schmidt for Coach Roy Christmon. Pontiac did not field a team last season for Coach Christopher Wright so it will be interesting to see what they have. The favorite is Clarkston and it’s not even close. The Wolves had an interesting offseason which saw a coaching change. Clarkston has Maddy Skourpski, Izzy Hadley, Ava Hernandez, Kierra Tomlie, Sophia Walker, Emerson Wood, Mia Zorski, Emily Valenca, and Lena Eblencamp for Coach Aaron Goodnough. This district is the Wolves to lose.
District 26 at Detroit Renaissance
BERKLEY
OAK PARK
ROYAL OAK
Detroit Mumford
Detroit Renaissance
PROJECTED MPR: 1. Detroit Renaissance, 2. Detroit Mumford.
FAVORITE: Detroit Renaissance
NEXT: Berkley
DARKHORSE: Royal Oak
PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Ashley Loon-Berkley.
INSIGHT: It was a great year for Detroit Renaissance getting back to the Division One State Finals before losing to Hudsonville. The Phoenix should be solid again not only in this district but in the Detroit Public School League as well. They have Azaria Huggins, Kiyla Brooks, Nevaeh Wood, Harmonie Bolton, Makayla Coleman, Marhea Bradshaw, Makayla Johnson, Christian Sanders, Imani Johnson, Nyana Pharr, and Aubrey Johnson coming back for Coach Shane Lawal. Detroit Mumford should be very interesting to see. The Mustangs had a strong team last season for Coach Kareem Hogan. Royal Oak lost a ton of talent last season. The Ravens Maddie Hines and Danica Schmidt coming back for Coach Brian Sopota. Both of them saw postseason experience after the entire varsity team was out because of COVID-19 last season. Berkley made the district finals last season and will look to have a repeat performance again. The Bears have Ashley Loon, Ava Beard, Aurora Sousanis, and Sammi Withrow coming back for Coach Kirk Carolan. Oak Park made the district finals last season but the Knights will have something in the works for Coach Peggy Evans-Carr. This district has Detroit Renaissance written all over it but keep an eye on Berkley and Royal Oak.
District 27 at Farmington Hills Mercy
FARMINGTON
SOUTHFIELD ARTS AND TECH
Farmington Hills Mercy
Livonia Stevenson
Redford Thurston
PROJECTED MPR: 1. Farmington Hills Mercy, 2. Livonia Stevenson.
FAVORITE: Farmington Hills Mercy
NEXT: Livonia Stevenson
DARKHORSE: Southfield Arts and Tech
PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Maya White-Farmington Hills Mercy.
INSIGHT: This should be an interesting district to watch. Farmington lost a ton of talent from last season but Coach Laura Guzman has Autumn Bartlett coming back which should help. Southfield Arts and Tech is an interesting team to keep an eye on as they have Jalyn Austin coming back for Coach Shaquita Coltrane. Livonia Stevenson is an interesting team to keep a close eye on. The Spartans won 11 games last season. The Spartans have Kerry Donehue, Aubrie Ickes, Kaitlyn Wilmonth, Rachel Schornack, Gracie Shahu, Kalaia Jackson, Shea Hannigan, Jenna McWilliams, and Scarlett Webster coming back for Coach Kareem Smart. Redford Thurston should be interesting to watch. They won six games last season. The Eagles have Skylar Tulloss and Marionna Greene coming back for Coach Bob Ostrowski. Farmington Hills Mercy won 14 games last season falling to Detroit Renaissance in the regional finals. The Marlins have Francesca DeNardo, Grace Knittel, Carley Goebel, Sarah Cunnigham, Ava Lorraine, Lauren Smiley, Maya White, and Sophia Dugas coming back for Coach Gary Morris. This is shaping up to be an interesting district to see.
District 28 at West Bloomfield
WEST BLOOMFIELD
NORTH FARMINGTON
GROVES
SEAHOLM
BLOOMFIELD HILLS
Birmingham Marian
PROJECTED MPR: 1. Birmingham Marian, 2. West Bloomfield.
FAVORITE: Birmingham Marian
NEXT: West Bloomfield
DARKHORSE: North Farmington
PLAYER ON THE SPOT: McKenzie Swanson-Birmingham Marian.
INSIGHT: This is going to be the toughest district in the State in my opinion especially with the teams that are in here at West Bloomfield. Birmingham Marian is the favorite in the Catholic League. The Mustangs are very talented as well with Sarah Sylvester, McKenzie Swanson, Isabella Prezzato, Anna Herberholz, Maria Hesano, Abigail Luchessi, Ellie Ervin, and Grace Rotter coming back for Coach Mary Ciceronne. West Bloomfield has a talented group which should be the favorite in the Red for Coach Bert Mosley. The Lakers have Sydney Hendrix, Kendall Hendrix, Mya Hooper, Indya Davis, and Summer Davis coming back after missing out on the postseason because of COVID-19 protocols last season. Bloomfield Hills will be very interesting to watch. The Blackhawks should be improved with Amelia McCourt, Grace Main, Jessica Finney, and Ashley Forner coming back for Coach Kristen Massey. North Farmington is going to be very interesting as their boys and girls teams are in different districts and they should be improved. The Raiders have Sela Lefler, and Penelope Creary coming back for Coach Jeff Simpson. Seaholm should be interesting to watch not only in the Gold but in the district as well. The Maples have Shay Manchester, Kate Sullivan, Clara Guffey, and Annie Boogren coming back for Coach Chris Manchester. Groves has gone through a ton of changes this offseason. They have Jordan Peterson, Lily Gallagher, and Cira Racco coming back for Coach Allison Hidey. This should be a fun district as mentioned, there are plenty of good teams that are here in this district that’s for sure.
District 29 at Troy
TROY
TROY ATHENS
Warren Cousino
Warren Woods Tower
PROJECTED MPR: 1. Troy, 2. Warren Cousino.
FAVORITE: Troy
NEXT: Troy Athens
DARKHORSE: Warren Cousino
PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Charlotte Sobotka-Troy.
INSIGHT: Are the Colts for real, this district looks very winnable for them after three disappointing postseason exits they have this district made for them to get to the regionals. Troy has home court and are loaded with talent in Kendal Zeiter, Charlotte Sobotka, Alyssa Matuza (even though she’s out for the season-ACL,) and Mia Valiotis coming back for Coach Julius Porter. Troy Athens should be the Colts biggest challenger in this district. The Red Hawks are loaded with Gillian Ciak, Ellie Musko, CeCe Fey, Aarushi Lockdale, Jordyn Doyle, and Skylar Emerson coming back for Coach Stacie Klumpp. Warren Woods Tower really struggled last season winning four games despite being in the Macomb Area Conference Silver division. The Titans have Nikki Lavely, Corissa McCain, Arianna Jordan, and Delliah Mathews coming back for Coach Brian Socia. Warren Cousino is a darkhorse to watch in this district. They won 11 games last season and is in the Macomb Area Conference Red division. The Patriots have some proven experience in Kiara Williams, Twyla Parker, Ra’lyja Bridges, Julia Hopkins, Sydney Dixon, Mia Mixon, Emily Stevenson, Chloe Sakalas, and Jenna Smith coming back for Coach Amy Mitchell. Troy has things made but better be careful of the Red Hawks and Patriots.
District 58 at TBA
FERNDALE
FERNDALE UNIVERSITY
Birmingham Detroit Country Day
Detroit Jalen Rose Academy
Detroit Old Redford Academy
PROJECTED MPR: 1. Birmingham Detroit Country Day, 2. Ferndale University.
FAVORITE: Birmingham Detroit Country Day
NEXT: Ferndale University
DARKHORSE: Detroit Old Redford Academy
PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Jaidyn Elam-Birmingham Detroit Country Day.
INSIGHT: This is not a strong district as people think. Birmingham Detroit Country Day had a great season going 17-3 last season and making it to the MHSAA Division Two Semifinals before falling to Newaygo. The Yellow Jackets have Jaidyn Elam, Emma Arico, and Aysia Yokely coming back for second year coach Jerica Williams. Ferndale did not field a team last season and are looking for a new coach. Detroit Old Redford Academy didn’t field a team last season. Detroit Jalen Rose Academy didn’t field a team last season. Ferndale University should be very interesting to watch. The Eagles have some talent coming back for Coach Desdan Hester. This district looks to be a mismatch on paper.
District 60 at TBA
HARPER WOODS
Harper Woods Chandler Park Academy
Detroit Denby
Detroit Osborn
Eastpointe
St. Clair Shores South Lake
PROJECTED MPR: 1. Harper Woods Chandler Park Academy, 2. Harper Woods.
FAVORITE: Harper Woods Chandler Park Academy
NEXT: Harper Woods
DARKHORSE: Eastpointe
PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Kendall Kelly-Harper Woods
INSIGHT: This is shaping up to be an interesting district with whomever hosts this district. Harper Woods Chandler Park Academy won 11 games last season and is deemed the favorite in this district for Coach David Mann. Detroit Osborn really struggled last season only winning two games for Coach Tenetia Pulliam. St. Clair Shores South Lake really struggled going 3-8 last season for Coach Wilbur Jones. Eastpointe won 10 games last season for Coach Daniel Kirkland. Detroit Denby won six games last season. The Tars have the majority of their team coming back for Coach Marnina Sullivan. Harper Woods won seven games last season. They are entering a new league being one of the favorites in the Gold. The Pioneers have Kendall Kelsey, Mya Duncan, Shatyra Harris, Clarita Childs, Clearia Peterson, and Destiny Bealey coming back for Coach Paul Allen. This should be an interesting district to say the least.

Girls Volleyball Districts Are Out for 2021.
Written Friday June 11th at 9:45 PM
Hello everybody, the MHSAA released the districts for Girls Volleyball. Here are my early thoughts on each district and insight as well. Most districts are in Division One with the last one being in Division Two for the postseason.
Usually in the past the volleyball districts are the prelude to the basketball districts but it hasn’t always been the case.
Here they are. This blog will be updated periodically once we get updated information.
District 5 at Lakeland
CLARKSTON
Holly
Walled Lake Northern
Waterford Kettering
Lakeland
FAVORITE: Clarkston
NEXT: Lakeland
WILDCARD: Walled Lake Northern
PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Paige Giethbrock-Clarkston
INSIGHT: This is shaping up to be a very interesting district in White Lake. Clarkston should be the favorite in this district and is loaded for new coach in Alison Smith. The Wolves have Skylar Jidas, Elizabeth Adams, Kaitlyn Hoffman, Ella Post, Anna Kuebler, Cali Bordine, Sheeva Hajimirza, Kendall Lozzi, Emily Kuebler, McKenna Hempton, and Paige Giethbrock back from a team that went to the Division One state semifinals last season. Lakeland should be Clarkston’s toughest challenger in this district. The Eagles have Rachel Zurack, Eve Martin, and Julia Fledderjohn back for Coach Meghan Polce. Walled Lake Northern is an interesting team to watch. The Knights have Alyssa Bashir, Ava Epley, Olivia Bonkowski, Hannah Tims, Sarah Tims, Isabella Harding, Abby Zang, and Kayla Budziak back for Coach A’Jhanne Smith. Waterford Kettering has Emily Nuttall and Naomi Hilliard back for Coach Rod Armstrong. Holly should be the darkhorse in this district. The Bronchos lost a ton of experience from last season and will have a new coach. They have Delaney Jenkinson, Isabella Smith, Mary Grace McAninch, Selah Beeler, Marissa Walker, and Macy Martin coming back. This should be an interesting district to say the least as mentioned.
District 6 at West Bloomfield
NORTH FARMINGTON
WEST BLOOMFIELD
Novi
Walled Lake Central
Walled Lake Western
FAVORITE: Novi
NEXT: Walled Lake Central
WILDCARD: West Bloomfield
PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Charlotte Warner-North Farmington
INSIGHT: This is shaping up to be an interesting district that has two OAA teams, two Lakes Valley League teams, and a Kensington Lakes Activities Association team. West Bloomfield has a new volleyball coach in Nancy McKowen. McKowen has Kalin McCoury, Cara Hartley, Lily Wardle, Paige Geiser, Marissa Bovo, Kate Horvath, Kennedy Knox, Arianna Hood, Nicole Albani, and Nadia Smith back. There is some experience but the coaching transition will have to happen during the season which will be a challenge for the Lakers. The early favorite in this district is Novi. The Wildcats have a few players coming back in Grace Dziedzic, Ally Sharnowski, Charlotte Stoy, Sarah Calanchi, Lauren Trainor, Rachel Karr, Reganne Bennett, Sarah Vellucci, and Katie Harpenau. They had a deep postseason run getting to the Division One State semifinals last season for Coach Kacy Bryon. North Farmington has Amelia Scarchilli, Giseele Kassab, Charlotte Warner, Erica Fetterman, Jenna Lee, Maya Weisberger, Emma Berlanger, Nyla Peter-Koyi, Grace Garrett, and Mary Dadisho coming back for Coach Michael Love. Walled Lake Central should be an interesting team to watch with Dru LeValley, Ella Sechrist, Kate LeValley, Gabbi Hajji, Mya Arafat, Alison Karana, Ava Wojciechowski, and Ashlyn Campbell back for Coach Sarah Schmidt. Walled Lake Western has Julia Orando, Alyssa Samp, Jordan Baetz, Kylie Dickinson, and Ryah Dewey back for Coach Gino Salciccori. Novi is the early favorite as mentioned but this is the gray court of West Bloomfield and upsets have happened in the past.
District 7 at Birmingham Marian
SEAHOLM
BLOOMFIELD HILLS
FARMINGTON
Birmingham Marian
Farmington Hills Mercy
FAVORITE: Birmingham Marian
NEXT: Farmington Hills Mercy
WILDCARD: Seaholm
PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Ava Brizard-Birmingham Marian
INSIGHT: This is shaping up to be an interesting district especially when there are two Catholic League powers that met three times last season (regional final) and they could very much meet again three times this season with both teams being in the same district which is very odd for volleyball standards. Birmingham Marian won the Division One State Championship last season. They are loaded again and have home court for the district this season. The Mustangs have a ton of experience in Sarah Sylvester, Ava Brizard, Ava Sarafa, Sophia Treder, McKenzie Swanson, and Lauren Heming coming back for Coach Mayssa Cook. Farmington Hills Mercy has Ella Shelds, Erin Kline, Leah LaFontaine, Amina Robinson, Liz Kitchen, Lauren Smiley, and Lauren Mullan. Back for Coach Loretta Vogel. The Marlins are coming off a very tough loss to the Mustangs in the regional finals last season. Seaholm whom could be a darkhorse if things go right has a ton of experience coming back in Audrey Brown, Makena Justice, Maggie Liebler, Ella Stangland, Katie Sullivan, Jessie Rebock, Jordan Lindner, Sydney Ryan, Lily Fischer, Katrina Ness, and Makayla Bolnick for Coaches Jason and Heather Gambone. Farmington has some questions after losing a ton of talent from last season for Coach Kate Drews. Bloomfield Hills has Lauren Chioini, Hannah Teer, Ava Petrucci, Grace Siepierski, Danielle Rasi, Alex Voss, Ashlea Nwabueze, and Gabrielle Jefferies for Coach Larry Wyatt. I don’t see anyone beating the Catholic League powers unless they are in the same side of the bracket then anything is possible.
District 8 at Oxford
AVONDALE
LAKE ORION
OXFORD
PONTIAC
ADAMS
Waterford Mott
FAVORITE: Lake Orion
NEXT: Oxford
WILDCARD: Adams
PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Mandy Knieper-Lake Orion
INSIGHT: This should be an interesting district that features a couple of powerhouse programs. Adams has been very successful as of late making deep district postseason runs despite being in a district with Stoney Creek and Utica Eisenhower. The Highlanders run has ended in districts with Stoney Creek and Utica Eisenhower but the MHSAA moved Adams to another district. Adams beat the Dragons and the Wildcats in the regular season last year which should give them some confidence. The Highlanders have Jenna Jenkins, Rosalia Simon, Jacoby Fylnn, Ella Pease, Alyssa Edwards, Nikitha Srikrisha, and Gracie Teolis for Coach Terry Baughman. Lake Orion has proven postseason experience despite falling to Clarkston in the district finals last season. The Dragons have Nina Horning, Hannah Lynch, Anna Wandrie, Lauren Peters, Kara Delventhal, Piper Talaga, Anja Roedenback, Kayla Chen, Mandy Knieper, Malinda Brunk, and Jada McCauley back for Coach Tony Scavarda. Avondale is an interesting team despite really struggling last season. The Yellow Jackets have Emily Beckas, Anna Lubman, Ariyana Ingall, Laila Hammond, Madison Grenier, and Marissa Zoller back for Coach Andrew Stepp. Oxford is an interesting team to watch and they are at the Ian Smith Gym which helps a lot. The Wildcats have been a proven power and have improved each season. Oxford has Raegan Bell, Baylee Proctor, Ava Wiscombe, Ashley Horne, Rachel Townsend, Carleigh Turek, Margaret Feltz, Kealey Kolp, and Paige Hasselbring back for Coach Brian Kim. Pontiac struggled last season and they could very well do so again. Waterford Mott has struggled in the Lakes Valley Conference. The Corsairs have Sophia Vue, Dylan Chamberlian, and Kinsley Lamb back for Coach Kirk Bagg. I’m seeing this district right now being a three team district but could be a four teamer if things work out in someone’s direction.
District 27 at Detroit Renaissance
BERKLEY
OAK PARK
SOUTHFIELD ARTS AND TECH
Detroit Mumford
Detroit Renaissance
Warren Fitzgerald
FAVORITE: Berkley
NEXT: Detroit Renaissance
WILDCARD: Warren Fitzgerald
PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Sawyer Jones-Berkley
INSIGHT: This is shaping up to be a very interesting district in Wayne County. The early favorite has to be Berkley in which they shocked a ton of experts. Coach Eric Wachterhauser has done a remarkable job turning the program around in his first season coaching the program. Wachterhauser is looking for more in his second year. Berkley has a ton of experience from their district championship team which won their first crown since 2012. The Bears have Hannah Roddis, Jordan Budzinski, Sawyer Jones, Claire Leonard, Ella Schneider, Ava Beard, Ariel Gibson, Sammi Withrow, Sophia Dawkins, Lily Keefe, Skylar Walter, and Amayah Watkins to give them that experience. Detroit Renaissance should be the Bears toughest challenger in this district. The Phoenix fell to Berkley in the district finals last season. Detroit Renaissance should be a team to watch with Summer Hutchins, Mackenzie Flowers, Trinity Loundmon, Mackenzie Jarvis, Sydney Hall, Lauren Greene, Keiana Burr, and Brooklyn Jones back for Coach Louis Mitchell. Southfield Arts and Tech and Oak Park did not field teams last season. Warren Fitzgerald was decent despite being in the Macomb Area Conference Bronze last season. Detroit Mumford really struggled and could do so again this season. As of right now this looks to be a two team district between Berkley and Detroit Renaissance.
District 29 at Stoney Creek
ROCHESTER
STONEY CREEK
Romeo
Utica Eisenhower
Port Huron
Port Huron Northern
FAVORITE: Stoney Creek
NEXT: Utica Eisenhower
WILDCARD: Port Huron
PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Julia Gilbert-Port Huron
INSIGHT: This is shaping up to be an interesting district over on Tienken and Sheldon Road which features two Oakland County teams, two Macomb County teams, and two St. Clair County teams. Stoney Creek has to be the early favorite because of the talent they have coming back and home court as well. The Cougars have Sydney Tomlak, Kierra Shanahan, Tiffany Tang, Lucie Hranacova, Kathleen Brown, Sydney Bell, and Grace Lombardo coming back for Coach Ross Talbott. Port Huron comes into this district after being with New Baltimore Anchor Bay and Macomb Dakota for a long while. They shared the Macomb Area Blue title last season with Utica Ford II. The Big Reds have Julia Gilbert, Mia Jacobs, Lainey Lochota, and Ella Jacobs coming back back for Coach Derek Arena. Rochester made some noise in the postseason. They upset Romeo in the district semifinals but fell to Utica Eisenhower in the district finals. The Falcons have Leah Stone, Abigail Carballo, Marissa Gallagher, Maddie Nikolic, Lilly Pratt, and Jasmine Savoi coming back for Coach Kirk Gibbs. Utica Eisenhower lost two really talented players who were all state from last season’s district championship team. The Eagles have Ava Wolfe, Izzy Biermann, Gianna Jakubowski, Nina Tabaka, Santa Kalaj, Katie Smith, and Santina Fioritto coming back for Coach Kaitlyn LaPratt. Romeo had a decent season last year and will look to be better. The Bulldogs have Trista Ameel, Caitlyn Jaskowski, Cassidy Banach, Ella Lackowski and Elizabeth Fowler back for Coach Stacey Williams. Port Huron Northern whom is a newcomer to this district struggled last season. The Huskies should be better this season. They have Allison Caughel, Kylie Guyette, Hailey Guilloz, Marley Patterson, Abby Landschoot, Lilly Knowlton, Cooper Manuillow, Jersey McHregor, Madison Palmer, and Anna Kerhoulas back for Coach Randi Kaufmann. This district is looking very interesting to keep an eye on for sure.
District 30 at Troy Athens
GROVES
ROYAL OAK
TROY
TROY ATHENS
Warren Mott
FAVORITE: Troy
NEXT: Troy Athens
WILDCARD: Groves
PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Madison Kinsman-Troy Athens
INSIGHT: This is shaping up to be an interesting district with a ton of storylines coming into the season and once the postseason starts. Groves has a blend of youth and experience with Lauren Brown, Lydia McKeever, Mara Chalifoux, Ava Kirchinger, Lauren Sample, Dajah Mines, Becca Apsey, and Heaven Harris back for new coach Madison Clouse. Troy has some questions but never count out a Coach Tom Viligant squad. The Colts have Savannah Baranowski, Aliya Walters, Tessa Johansson, Sam Watson, Alvina Zaitona, Lauren Boehmer, and Lindsey Van Buhler back. Warren Mott had a great year making it to the district semifinals before falling to Berkley in the district semifinals last season. The Marauders should be a player this season in the Macomb Area Silver for Coach Camisha Coleman. Troy Athens should be an interesting team to watchas they have home court. The Red Hawks has proven experience in Madison Kinsman, Gillian Ciak, Alexa Withun, Anneliese Schriber, Ally Moscone, Casey Gruber, and Nya Mays back for Coach Jeff Williams. Royal Oak should be interesting to see as Coach Ciara Schultz has done well heading into her third season with the Ravens. This is shaping up as mentioned to be an interesting district to keep an eye on for sure.
District 57 at TBA
FERNDALE
FERNDALE UNIVERSITY
Birmingham Detroit Country Day
Hazel Park
Detroit Pershing
FAVORITE: Birmingham Detroit Country Day
NEXT: Ferndale
WILDCARD: Hazel Park
PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Emily Foster-Ferndale
INSIGHT: This is shaping up to be a very interesting district whomever hosts this district, most likely it could be Birmingham Detroit Country Day that hosts. Birmingham Detroit Country Day looks to be the favorite with whom they have back along with the proven postseason experience. The Yellow Jackets have three all state players in Nyla Muskovin, Morgan Lockhart and Serena Nyambio for Coach Kim Lockhart. Ferndale should be Birmingham Detroit Country Day’s toughest challenger in this district. The Eagles have some district championship experience of their own in Emily Foster. Foster has done really well in her career for Coach Stella Johnstone. Hazel Park is another interesting team to watch. The Vikings have some talent and are well coached under Coach Sherry Rietz. I don’t expect much from Ferndale University or Detroit Pershing in this district but you never know. The Eagles are well coached under Julie Patterson despite the struggles. It will be interesting to see if Ferndale University will make some noise. I see this district for now being a two team district.

These are the early summer football rankings heading into the fall. This is NOT the official top 21 for football, that comes later. Anyway here are my thoughts heading into the summer for all 21 football teams.
- West Bloomfield: Defending Division One State Champs are loaded and looking for more.
- Adams: Highlanders are loaded at the skill positions but line play despite having Hassan Murray is a question mark.
- Clarkston: Wolves have the skill positions covered but line play despite having Cole Dellinger is a question mark.
- Oxford: Wildcats have a ton of experience coming back, can they put it together is the question???
- Lake Orion: Dragons have a ton of questions heading into this season.
- North Farmington: Ryan Shelby takes over at quarterback but depth is a huge concern.
- Southfield Arts and Tech: Hopefully the new coaching staff will rejuvenate the Warriors.
- Stoney Creek: Cougars likely starting over in a very tough division this season.
- Rochester: Falcons have experience but how will that do against tougher competition???
- Berkley: Something tells me that the Bears are in for a special season.
- Groves: Falcons have a ton of questions despite having Jaden Mangham back.
- Oak Park: Knights lost a ton of talent last season which could be trouble.
- Ferndale: Eagles bounced back last season but can they sustain it???
- Farmington: New coach, new division, same issues for the Falcons.
- Seaholm: When you have to play Lake Orion and Clarkston for the crossovers oh boy.
- Avondale: Yellow Jackets haven’t been able to put things together lately.
- Troy Athens: Red Hawks had a bounce back season last year. Can they sustain it???
- Troy: Colts look to be turning things around a little bit.
- Bloomfield Hills: Blackhawks are in a very tough place right now.
- Royal Oak: Ravens have only one playoff appearance not counting 2020 since 2007.
- Pontiac: Phoenix have a long road ahead of them, 5-73 since 2012.

Softball District Preview.
Written Thursday May 20th at 11:15 AM
Here is my preview and projections for the upcoming softball districts that will happen in a few weeks.
District 4 @ Grand Blanc
Grand Blanc vs. Davison
Grand Blanc/Davison vs. Lapeer
OXFORD vs. Holly
INSIGHT/PREDICTION: This is shaping up to be an interesting district in Grand Blanc. Grand Blanc, Davison, Lapeer, and Oxford are very good teams. The Bobcats have a very talented pitcher in Kendall Klochack whom is having a stellar season. The Cardinals and Lightning have been honorable mentions in the state during the season. The Wildcats are always a stout team and they have a ton of offense to boot as well. Oxford got a great draw. They could possibly get to the district final if they get by Holly in the district semifinals. Grand Blanc, Davison, and Lapeer know each other really well being in the Saginaw Valley League. The Bobcats who is state ranked have had a very strong season with their only loss was to the Lightning and they have had some tight games with the Cardinals. I think Grand Blanc behind Klochack will get to the district finals and eventually getting them to the regionals over the Wildcats. PICK: GRAND BLANC.
District 21 @ Berkley
BERKLEY vs. SOUTHFIELD ARTS AND TECH
FERNDALE vs. Detroit Renaissance
INSIGHT/PREDICTION: This is not a strong district when looking at the teams in Berkley. The favorite in this district is Detroit Renaissance with their talent and experience. Ferndale moves up to Division One after being in Division Two which resulted in two district titles but moving up in this district could pose a ton of challenges and to make things worse they play the Phoenix first in the district semifinals. Berkley is a very interesting team to keep an eye on. They have home field and a favorable district semifinal matchup with Southfield Arts and Tech. The Bears should get to the district finals. I really don’t see anyone challenging Detroit Renaissance in this district. PICK: DETROIT RENAISSANCE.
District 22 @ Sterling Heights
Warren Mott vs. ROYAL OAK
Warren Mott/ROYAL OAK vs. Warren Cousino
Sterling Heights vs. Warren Regina
INSIGHT/PREDICTION: This is not a strong district in Sterling Heights but there is a powerhouse program in Warren Regina. Warren Cousino could pose some trouble. I really don’t see anyone challenging the Satellites in this district. PICK: WARREN REGINA.
District 26 @ Livonia Stevenson
Novi vs. Livonia Stevenson
Novi/Livonia Stevenson vs. Farmington Hills Mercy
NORTH FARMINGTON vs. FARMINGTON
INSIGHT/PREDICTION: This is going to be a very interesting district in Livonia. Farmington Hills Mercy, Novi, and Farmington have great chances to win this district. The Wildcats have a really good and talented pitcher in Reganne Bennett. Pending if they get by the Spartans then they would play the Marlins in the district semifinals. The Falcons have had a really good and surprising season. They are on the verge of winning the Red. Farmington takes on North Farmington in the district semifinals which is very interesting. The Marlins have had a very good season under a first year coach. I think Farmington Hills Mercy will get past Novi and Farmington to get to the regionals PICK: FARMINGTON HILLS MERCY.
District 27 @ Waterford Mott
Waterford Kettering vs. CLARKSTON
Waterford Mott vs. AVONDALE
INSIGHT/PREDICTION: This is not a very strong district when looking at the teams at Waterford Mott. Clarkston is a slight favorite despite having a very rough season. The Wolves are very young but they are still Clarkston which is a proven powerhouse program. Avondale and Waterford Kettering could give fits especially the Captains. Until anyone gives the Wolves fits, this is Clarkston’s district to lose. PICK: CLARKSTON.
District 28 @ Groves
SEAHOLM vs. WEST BLOOMFIELD
GROVES vs. BLOOMFIELD HILLS
INSIGHT/PREDICTION: This is shaping up to be a very interesting district in Beverly Hills. Bloomfield Hills and Groves are favored in this district however they will see each other in the district semifinals which will be very interesting. Seaholm has been picking things up lately and is a possible spoiler and darkhorse. West Bloomfield is also improved and is ready to make some noise. They will play each other in the district semifinals. The Maples should get past the Lakers and meet Bloomfield Hills in the district finals. I think the Blackhawks to move onto the regionals because of experience. PICK: BLOOMFIELD HILLS.
District 29 @ Stoney Creek
LAKE ORION vs. STONEY CREEK
ROCHESTER vs. ADAMS
INSIGHT/PREDICTION: This is a very interesting district at Stoney Creek. Lake Orion is a mystery team to figure out but so has been Adams and Rochester. The Dragons and Highlanders are starting to peak at the right time. The Falcons have also been having a really good season. The Cougars have been very good throughout the season and features a standout in Emily Flynn. This one is a tough district to choose as all four teams have great shots to win this district. With what happened recently, Lake Orion is starting to get it’s act together which is not a good thing for the field. PICK: LAKE ORION.
District 30 @ Troy
TROY vs. Utica
Utica Eisenhower vs. TROY ATHENS
INSIGHT/PREDICTION: This is shaping up to be a very interesting district at Troy. I see three teams having great chances to win this district in Troy, Troy Athens, and Utica Eisenhower. The Colts have been very inconsistent. The Red Hawks have been playing much better Utica Eisenhower has had a good season. The Eagles are peaking at the right time heading into this district. I think Troy should get past Utica in the district semifinals but the other game should be very interesting and tight. I’m looking at a Utica Eisenhower/Colts district finals with the Eagles moving onto the regionals. PICK: UTICA EISENHOWER.

Basketball Districts Released and Thoughts.
Written Sunday March 14th at 11:30 AM
Here are my thoughts on the brackets released earlier this morning.
Boys
Boys Basketball Districts article from September.
https://sammy-taormina.blogspot.com/2020/09/boys-basketball-districts-are-out-2020.html
District 26 @ Detroit Renaissance
ROYAL OAK vs BERKLEY
ROYAL OAK/BERKLEY vs Detroit Renaissance
Detroit University-Detroit Jesuit vs Detroit Mumford
Detroit University-Detroit Jesuit/Detroit Mumford vs OAK PARK
THOUGHTS: I didn’t understand how Oak Park earned the bye while Detroit University-Detroit Jesuit has to play Detroit Mumford on that Tuesday but thanks to the Clarkston Basketball Twitter page for helping me understand this issue it was that they did not play eight games before the bracket came out which was why the Knights got the bye and not the Cubs. Royal Oak and Berkley is going to be very interesting with the winner playing the hosts from Detroit Renaissance which neither team matches up with. Until proven otherwise Detroit University-Detroit Jesuit should win this district over Detroit Renaissance.
District 25 @ Birmingham Brother Rice
SOUTHFIELD ARTS AND TECH vs GROVES
SOUTHFIELD ARTS AND TECH/GROVES vs Birmingham Brother Rice
SEAHOLM vs FARMINGTON
SEAHOLM/FARMINGTON vs NORTH FARMINGTON
THOUGHTS: This should be a competitive district at Birmingham Brother Rice. The Warriors are young, talented, well coached, and have home court. Birmingham Brother Rice better be careful of Groves whom is gaining a ton of confidence should they get by Southfield Arts and Tech. On the other side of the bracket North Farmington is overwhelming favored to get to the district finals. I don’t see either Seaholm or Farmington touching the Raiders. It’s going to come down to North Farmington vs either Birmingham Brother Rice or otherwise.
District 30 @ Troy Athens
Sterling Heights vs Chippewa Valley
Sterling Heights/Chippewa Valley vs TROY ATHENS
Utica Ford vs Sterling Heights Stevenson
THOUGHTS: Troy Athens is in a very difficult spot despite being the host in the district. If they can get by either Chippewa Valley or Sterling Heights in the district semifinals which looks very doable despite the Red Hawks falling to Chippewa Valley last season then they could be on a collision course with Sterling Heights Stevenson whom should be the favorite in this district. The Titans have a ton of options to go too and have had impressive wins over Macomb Dakota and other Macomb Area Conference Red division foes. Troy Athens and Margaret have a very dangerous path in this district.
District 29 @ Stoney Creek
Utica vs ROCHESTER
Utica/ROCHESTER vs STONEY CREEK
Utica Eisenhower vs TROY
THOUGHTS: Stoney Creek has went from almost favorites to pretty much the favorite in the district. Troy has really struggled lately however to their defense they have not had a lot of practice time due to being in COVID protocol but it’s not an excuse for their recent struggles, now could they find that magic in the postseason???, it’s very possible. Rochester and Utica is very interesting along with Utica Eisenhower and the Colts. I see this being a Stoney Creek/Troy district final because I don’t see anyone touching the two seeded teams.
District 6 @ Bloomfield Hills
WEST BLOOMFIELD vs AVONDALE
WEST BLOOMFIELD/AVONDALE vs Orchard Lake St Marys
PONTIAC vs Waterford Mott
PONTIAC/Waterford Mott vs BLOOMFIELD HILLS
THOUGHTS: I think could be more competitive than people think. Orchard Lake St. Marys is talented and loaded but West Bloomfield can match them athletically despite the rough season the Lakers are having. On the other side of the bracket Bloomfield Hills has home court and should get to the district final but Pontiac could be a challenge but not sold on their league only schedule. I think this is shaping up to be a Blackhawks/Eaglets district finals. Could an upset be in the making??? We’ll see.
District 5 @ Oxford
Waterford Kettering vs LAKE ORION
Waterford Kettering/LAKE ORION vs CLARKSTON
OXFORD vs Romeo
OXFORD/Romeo vs ADAMS
THOUGHTS: This should be a very competitive district. Clarkston is favored on paper but Adams and Lake Orion could very well give the Wolves problems in this district. Lake Orion if they can get by a very good Waterford Kettering team that features a very good and talented player in Bennie Krenshaw could be in line to face the Wolves in the district semifinal. The Dragons are a darkhorse although they are lettered A, they would had been the third seed if the MHSAA seeded everyone. On the other side of the bracket there is Adams. The Highlanders should be well motivated and hungry despite getting the bye. They will get either Romeo or Oxford. Neither team hasn’t had the brightest of seasons but they could make up for it come in the postseason. This should be a fun district at Oxford
District 58 @ Ferndale
Detroit Henry Ford vs FERNDALE UNIVERSITY
Hazel Park vs FERNDALE
THOUGHTS: This district should be no problems for Ferndale. The Eagles should pass this district with flying colors. They have home court, best team, and the best matchup. I don’t see anyone touching Ferndale in this district.
Girls
Girls Basketball District article from September.
https://sammy-taormina.blogspot.com/2020/09/girls-basketball-districts-are-out-2020.html
District 27 @ Detroit Renaissance
Warren Fitzgerald vs Detroit Renaissance
OAK PARK vs Detroit Mumford
OAK PARK/Detroit Mumford vs Warren Mott
THOUGHTS: Could Oak Park get to the district finals??? It certainly looks possible with how the draw looks. I haven’t been really impressed with either Detroit Mumford or Warren Mott this season. The Marauders have the bye with the two seed which means Coach Peggy Evans-Carr’s team will have to play the Mustangs on Monday. I think the Knights have played very well throughout the season. Do I think they will win this district??? likely not especially when the host school is loaded, experienced, talented, well coached, and have home court to boot as well. If Oak Park can get to the district final then that would be a success.
District 26 @ Royal Oak
SOUTHFIELD ARTS AND TECH vs GROVES
ROYAL OAK vs SEAHOLM
ROYAL OAK/SEAHOLM vs BERKLEY
THOUGHTS: This district could be very interesting when looking at the teams that are in this district. The good news for this district was that Birmingham Marian whom was supposed to be in this district went north and is with West Bloomfield in another district. The early favorite has to be Groves with what they have done this season along with playing a very tough non league schedule but Berkley and Royal Oak could have strong says. The Ravens lost twice to Southfield Arts and Tech last season but beat the Warriors in the district semifinals. Royal Oak has home court will have to go through Berkley pending should they get by Seaholm. The Bears should be motivated despite not being very deep and getting a bye to the district semifinals. On the other side of the bracket the Falcons are no strangers with Southfield Arts and Tech. Also assistant coach Jereica Hughes knows the Warriors players since she was an assistant last season and played for Coach Michelle Marshall at Southfield-Lathrup. Groves beat Southfield Arts and Tech twice in the regular season but the last game went double overtime. It is never easy beating a team three times in a season. I think this is likely going to be a Falcons/Ravens district final with the slightest of edges favoring Groves but just barely.
District 25 @ Novi
Novi vs Farmington Hills Mercy
NORTH FARMINGTON vs Livonia Stevenson
NORTH FARMINGTON/Livonia Stevenson vs FARMINGTON
THOUGHTS: This district looks to be Farmington Hills Mercy’s to lose but I think they could run into some problems. I don’t see Novi challenging the Marlins despite having home court for their first round matchup. North Farmington if they can find some scoring could give opponents fits with their pressure trap defense but Livonia Stevenson is a very tough program and could give the Raiders some fits in the opening round game. Whomever wins that game will play Farmington in the district semifinals. The Falcons have played a difficult non league schedule to get them ready for the postseason. I see this district being a Farmington Hills Mercy/Farmington district final but end of the day I see Farmington Hills Mercy winning this district.
District 29 @ Rochester
Utica Eisenhower vs STONEY CREEK
TROY ATHENS vs ROCHESTER
TROY ATHENS/ROCHESTER vs TROY
THOUGHTS: Stoney Creek has been rolling on all cylinders as of late which is a good sign going forward. The Cougars should be motivated after losing to Utica Eisenhower in the district semifinals at home last season. Rochester and Troy Athens should be a very interesting game. The winner will play Troy in the district semifinals. The Colts have been struggling as of late which is not a good sign. The postseason failures in the last two years have to be in the mind of the Troy ladies. Stoney Creek is the early favorites but don’t give up on Troy especially if the Colts can find their first half of the season magic.
District 4 @ Grand Blanc
OXFORD vs Grand Blanc
Lapeer vs Flint Kearsley
Lapeer/Flint Kearsley vs Davison
THOUGHTS: Wow, Oxford has a very tough matchup on the horizon going north into Genesee County. The Wildcats get to play Grand Blanc at their home court in the district semifinals. The Bobcats are loaded with talented players and Oxford doesn’t matchup with them at all. On the other side of the bracket Davison has a great chance to get to the district finals. It’s going to be a challenge to say the least for the Wildcats.
District 6 @Waterford Mott
Waterford Mott vs WEST BLOOMFIELD
BLOOMFIELD HILLS vs AVONDALE
BLOOMFIELD HILLS/AVONDALE vs Birmingham Marian
THOUGHTS: This has the makings of a great district final between West Bloomfield and Birmingham Marian whom are two of the top teams in the State. This district in general is not very strong when looking at these teams. I don’t see Bloomfield Hills, Avondale, or Waterford Mott making any serious case to the top two seeds in this district. The Lakers and Mustangs is set to be a classic in the making.
District 5 @ Romeo
Waterford Kettering vs CLARKSTON
ADAMS vs Romeo
ADAMS/Romeo vs LAKE ORION
THOUGHTS: If I’m Adams BEWARE. Romeo has played well at home this year and they are coming off COVID quarantine. Lake Orion has had injuries to their top two players but their young core has stepped up which is a good sign. The Dragons will certainly be a team to watch as they earned the two seed and the bye. Clarkston is the heavy favorite in this district because of their experience. I don’t know if I see anyone touching the Wolves right now.
District 58 @ Host Sites
Warren Lincoln at Hazel Park
Warren Regina at FERNDALE UNIVERSITY
THOUGHTS: Warren Lincoln has to be the favorite in this district of host sites. Ferndale University if they can get by Warren Regina whom is very experienced might add could get a district finals matchup with Warren Lincoln. Although the Abes are favored in this district watch for the Eagles. They are gaining confidence with their time in the OAA.

- Rochester (3-7) – Falcons have really been struggling since exiting COVID protocol.
- Troy Athens (4-8) – Red Hawks struggling heading into the final week.
- Oak Park (5-2) – Knights have improved and getting better. Major part has been the play of Tamara Todd.
