Okemos Sends Coach Out With Title Win

After 11 years, Okemos boys tennis coach Chris Silker is riding off into the coaching sunset to spend more time with his three young children and focus on his real estate business. But before doing so, Silker finished one last ride with another group of kids he’s helped raise on the tennis court for the past 12 to 13 years.

South Lyon Celebrates 1st Title, Cui Earns 2nd

For the South Lyon girls golf team, it was a first.  For Allison Cui of Okemos, it was number two. And for all of the competitors Friday at Forest Akers West playing in the Lower Peninsula Division 2 Finals, it was a relief that there simply was a competition in the first place to conclude a season where the Covid-19 pandemic has had school programs, and society in general, on edge.

1st & Goal: Week 8 In Review

Even with a shortened regular season, football teams across Michigan are equaling past accomplishments or at least making better on their performances of a year ago.
Many of our notes this week highlight the crowning, at least partially in some cases, of a league champion. But those other little successes – like surpassing last season’s win total, or ending a losing streak – also make every week memorable, with many more teams seeing the fruits of work and patience during an otherwise unpredictable fall.

After Record Finish, Onsted Off To Fast Start

Last season the Onsted volleyball team had about as impressive a season as it could. The Wildcats started by not losing until early October – a 28-match win streak – and finished with a school-record 50 victories. What are they doing for an encore? How about a 21-2 start this fall, a tremendous showing at a big quad in Bronson and they are on the verge of back-to-back Lenawee County Athletic Association titles.

Johnston Finds Home With Onsted Hoops

When Mary Kay LaFerney moved from California to Michigan, she had no idea the impact a group of freshmen and sophomore boys were going to have on her son. And she certainly didn’t know it would be because of basketball. But that’s what happened this past season for LaFerney and her son, Zachary Johnston, at Onsted High School in Lenawee County.

Clinton Joins Elite Group Of Mat Champs

Team wrestling has become the most difficult MHSAA sport for new contenders to break into the championship elite. From 2010-19, 10 schools combined to win the 40 Finals championships over four divisions. Divisions 2, 3 and 4 all saw a decade’s worth of titles split between just two teams.

‘Retired’ Garvey Remains Eager To Give

Last week, Mike Garvey told his wife she can’t let him quit all that he does to contribute to school sports across the state of Michigan, even if he is officially “retired.” But after 40 years serving in a variety of roles, he really doesn’t have plans to stop. And she wasn’t intending to make that request. “I married the best girl in the world,” Garvey said, “and she’s supportive and urges me to do the stuff that I enjoy.”

2019 Hoops Finals To Reair On FSD

NFHS Voice: Madness To Maddening

March Madness took on another meaning for everyone in the sports world during the week of March 9 – a week like none other in the history of organized sports with the acceleration of the coronavirus (COVID-19) in the United States. The Madness was not the bouncing of basketballs in arenas around the country.

Have You Herd? Buchanan Tradition Lives On

Every year cheering in Buchanan High School’s student section is different – a different mix of students guarantees a different leadership style, different ideas and different levels of creativity. But let’s not confuse different with new. Buchanan has built one of the state’s richest student section traditions, and with the accolades to back it up – Battle of the Fans championships in 2013 and 2018 and four other finals finishes.

Caro Closing In On Historic Title Claim

With three seniors who had played at least parts of the last two seasons on varsity, and a standout freshman making her debut, the Caro girls basketball team had plenty of reasons to make winning its league the goal this winter. But with Reese coming off its 12th-straight conference title – and Caro seeking its first since 1985 – history was not on the Tigers’ side.

Tate’s Return Sees Cass Tech Return To Elite

It didn’t take LaTonya Tate long to begin her basketball coaching career. But it took her 20 years to find the right fit. Tate is in her fifth season as girls varsity basketball coach at Detroit Cass Tech, and the Technicians are experiencing success not seen since Tate was one of the state’s top players for Cass Tech during the mid-to-late 1980s.

Sandusky’s Ryan Repeats, Aims For 4

Logan Ryan had to learn how to handle losing. After a youth career that saw her win multiple national wrestling honors, including the NUWAY Nationals in 2017, Ryan’s freshman year competing at 140 and 145 pounds proved to be difficult. “I got destroyed that year,” the Sandusky sophomore said. Now the losses are much less frequent, but she has figured out how to turn them into positives.

Rivals Benefit By Combining Mat Forces

Most Bark River-Harris and Powers North Central athletic teams have been fierce rivals for decades. The situation is much different in wrestling, however, as the two schools combined forces for the first time this winter through a co-op venture. “A year ago, our numbers were really down,” said BR-H coach Joe Racicot. “We were approached by the North Central AD (athletic director Randall McLeod) and he asked if we’d be interested in starting a co-op program.”

Be The Referee: Held Ball Or Traveling

This week, MHSAA officials coordinator Sam Davis offers a basketball “You Make the Call” that comes into play when defensive and offensive players wind up in a stalemate. Be The Referee is a series of short messages designed to help educate people on the rules of different sports, to help them better understand the art of officiating, and to recruit officials.

Inside The OAA: New District Playoff Format

The New Playoff District Format already has mixed reviews.

It looks like the new playoff format has received some blow back from coaches.

According to a MLive article written by Jared Purcell. He mentioned that when the brackets were released on Sunday for the Girls Basketball Districts. There was a knee-jerk reaction according to the written article.

Probably the most critical is that the top two seeds do not get byes in five, six, or seven team districts. Purcell said that coaches, players, and fans took to social media and contacted the MHSAA to complain about the new MPR format that decides the districts.

The MHSAA installed this new formula in May 2019 which is very similar to seeding teams in the postseason but only the top two seeds are seeded and is placed on the opposite side of the bracket while everyone else is based on alphabet.

The new system was enacted so that the top two teams don’t meet until the district finals.

The new system was used this season in Boys Soccer. The MPR also used in Lacrosse but they seed EVERYONE and not just the top two seeds.

According to Purcell, coaches were frustrated that they feel that everyone should be seeded based on their MPR and the timing of when the matchups were announced because there are critical games that are still to be played at the end of the season.

Bottom line the Boys and Girls Basketball pairings are DIFFERENT, NOT THE SAME.

The Boys Basketball pairings will be released next week.

My Initial Thoughts.

When the pairings were announced which involves OAA schools. The team I immediately thought of was Troy. The Colts are a number one seed in their district at Stoney Creek for Girls Basketball but they will have to play a pre-district game on that Monday against a very good Utica team. The Chieftains have had a good year thus far but because Utica is the B team in the district based on the alphabet, that’s the matchup. The Chieftains also beat Troy in the district final last season and return the majority of that team.

I wished the MHSAA would seed everyone and not just top two seeds. It would make the most sense but there are those folks who don’t want that, it’s a very divisive issue. The two biggest grievances that are out there is that the MHSAA is should the top two seeds be given the byes but there are those that prefer that the top two seeds should play on that Monday as some coaches have tweeted it. It depends who you talk too on this matter. Also another issue is that the MPR does NOT reward those teams who play a tough schedule. The new football playoff format rewards teams that play a tough strength of schedule.

Let the debates began.

Football Way Too Early Top 21.

Now I know football is not even close as we still have spring sports to look forward too. These are not the official rankings that will come in August but things could change at this point. Anyway here are the early rankings to what I see it right now in late January into February.

21. Pontiac: The Phoenix are hoping brighter days are ahead. Pontiac is 5-66 since 2011.

20. Royal Oak: The Ravens had a slew of injuries last season. Royal Oak is hoping to return to glory when they made the playoffs in 2017. The Ravens are 25-84 since 2008 which is something that Coach Ray McMann needs to fix.

19. Troy: The Colts closed out 2019 by scoring 45 points in their final two games however they are 2-16 since their last playoff appearance in 2017. Maybe the move down to the Blue will help Coach Chris Fraiser’s team.

18. Berkley: The Bears are 5-22 since 2016. That is something that Coach Sean Shields needs to fix in 2020.

17. Farmington: The Falcons lost a ton of talent to graduation. It could be a rebuilding year in 2020 for Coach Kory Cicroch and Farmington.

16. Rochester: The Falcons have a strong foundation to look forward to in quarterback Alex Bueno. The move to the Blue should also help Rochester grow.

15. Troy Athens: The Red Hawks improved last season winning three games. I like the direction that Coach Billy Keenest has Troy Athens going.

14. Ferndale: The Eagles are an interesting team to watch in 2020. They need to address some questions on both sides of the football.

13. Avondale: The Yellow Jackets will be an interesting team to watch in 2020. Avondale will need to replace a ton of experience from last season. Expect things to be different for Coach Corey Bell’s team.

12. Groves: The Falcons lost a ton of talent from last season’s team in which they allowed 91 points in their final two games. It will be very interesting for Coach Brendan Flaherty’s team to see how they respond in 2020.

11. Southfield Arts and Tech: The Warriors have the talent returning in running back Rae’Quan Lee and wide receivers Robert Army and Jeff Bowens along with tight end Caleb Banks. Southfield Arts and Tech has missed the playoffs three straight years, something that Coach Tim Conley wants to fix. The question for the Warriors will be is that how incoming quarterback Isiah Marshall adjusts to life in the Red.

10. Bloomfield Hills: The Blackhawks return a ton of experience led by quarterback Tanner Slazinski. Bloomfield Hills is primed to make some noise in the Blue in 2020.

9. Adams: The Highlanders sophomore class will be something to keep an eye on. Adams already has wide receiver Parker Picot already on Varsity. Expect more to be up on Varsity in 2020 for Coach Tony Patritto as they have to replace some key areas including quarterback.

8. Seaholm: The Maples had a very successful playoff run last season but they do lose some experience from that team however anytime you have a quarterback returning that is huge and Coach Jim DeWald has his quarterback back in Kaleb Kroner. Seaholm could make some noise in 2020.

7. Oxford: The Wildcats have a new coach in Zach Line and a brutal schedule looming which are huge concerns for me but I have faith in Oxford’s experience returning led by quarterback Brady Carpenter.

6. Oak Park: The Knights will have to replace a ton of skill players but they have running back DaVion Primm and wide receivers Jaylin Mimes, Davion Young, and Charles Gillespie not mentioning Rayshawn Benny is back up front. Quarterback and moving up to the Red are big questions for Coach Greg Carter’s team heading into 2020 but there is plenty of time to figure that out.

5. Lake Orion: The Dragons have a quarterback competition looming between Dominic Bruno and Kyler Carson. Lake Orion will need to replace a ton of skill players from last season’s team that graduated but the lines return which is a huge help for Coach John Blackstock.

4. Clarkston: The Wolves are trying to erase last season’s 3-6 record off their memory but they did gain a gem of a running back in Ethan Clark. Quarterback Mike DiPello is looking for a bounce back year for Coach Kurt Richardson despite questions at wide receiver and defense.

3. North Farmington: The Raiders lost a ton of talent from last season’s team that had their first unbeaten regular season since 1978 but quarterback Jacob Bousama returns which should help things for Coach Jon Herstein.

2. Stoney Creek: The Cougars may be the most balanced team in the OAA. Coach Nick Merlo’s team return a ton of experience. This team could be special in 2020.

1. West Bloomfield: The Lakers have the favorite for Mr. Football in Donovan Edwards. If Coach Ron Bellamy can address the quarterback situation and not rely a ton on Edwards then West Bloomfield could be a player again.

Performance: White Pigeon’s Claycee West

The 5-foot-8 senior guard scored a school-record 41 points during a 58-39 win over Marcellus on Jan. 7, breaking her previous single-game school record of 38 points scored as a sophomore to earn the MHSAA “Performance of the Week.” West also became her school’s all-time leading scorer Dec. 17 against Bangor, breaking her coach Brooke McClure’s career points record of 1,224, and West is since up to 1,308 after eight games this winter.

Byron ‘Family’ Filled With Family Ties

Every team refers to itself as a family in athletics. But the Byron girls basketball team takes that concept to a new level. There are two sets of sisters, a set of cousins, and three of the four coaches on the team coach their own daughters. But, assistant coach Brandy Forgie said, there’s more than that. “The family aspect doesn’t just come from being blood-related,” she said. “We’re all from Byron, born and raised, all but one of us as coaches, too.”

Champ Lilly Honed In On Historic Quest

Chris Lilly could have plenty of thoughts racing through his mind as he goes through his senior wrestling season at Croswell-Lexington. It’s his final year wrestling for his dad, Cros-Lex coach Joe Lilly, who has been in his corner since he began wrestling at 7 years old. It could be his final year wrestling competitively period, as he’s not sure he’ll continue with the sport in college.

Armada’s Fredette Receives NFHS Honor

Longtime Armada tennis coach David Fredette has been named one of 23 National Coaches of the Year for 2018-19 by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NHFS) Coaches Association. Fredette was selected first at the state level and then from among the eight sections that make up the NFHS – Michigan is part of Section 4 with Illinois, Indiana, Iowa and Wisconsin.

Hartland Sets Sights On Unprecedented Heights

This season isn’t half over for the Hartland girls basketball team. And as impressive as they’ve performed over the first six weeks, there are lessons from the last few seasons they must continue to recall with expectations high this winter. Take last week’s 50-40 win over Plymouth. The Eagles trailed early 14-1 – reinforcing coach Don Palmer’s message that every opponent is aiming to bring its best against a Hartland team with championship aspirations.

The Winter sports season is in full swing on MHSAA.tv and the NFHS Network. For the second straight week, more than 600 high school sporting events will have live streaming video.
