MDOT invites public comment on 2026-2029 draft State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP)

LANSING, Mich.  The draft 2026-2029 State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) document is available for public comment from July 10 – Aug. 10 at Michigan.gov/STIP.

The draft FY 2026 – 2029 STIP a federally mandated planning document, outlines road, bridge and transit projects slated for funding under the Federal Aid Transportation Program for Fiscal Years 2026-2029. Developed in coordination with local and regional agencies, it details project costs, schedules and funding sources. The draft STIP allocates $5.6 billion for road and bridge improvements and $2.1 billion for transit projects, covering enhancements to state-owned interstates, US, and M-routes, as well as safety upgrades to roads, trails, sidewalks, bridges, railways, and transit infrastructure.

The STIP includes details on the transportation planning process, public involvement and a financial plan comparing annual resources to new commitments. Michigan’s transportation programs are primarily funded through federal transportation funds derived from motor fuel and excise taxes, and distributed to states by formula.

The STIP is expected to receive final approval by Oct. 1. Public comments will be summarized in the final STIP that will be submitted to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) for review and approval.

Second Adopt-A-Highway cleanup coming Saturday

Fast facts:

  • The second Adopt-A-Highway pickup of the year is July 12-20.
  • Adopt-A-Highway volunteers collected more than 36,000 bags of trash last year.
  • Sections of highway in parts of the state are still available to adopt. Go to Michigan.gov/AdoptAHighway for more information.

LANSING, Mich. - Motorists should be on the lookout beginning Saturday as Adopt-A-Highway volunteers fan out across the state picking up litter. Participants in the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) program will clean highway roadsides from July 12 to 20 during the second of three scheduled pickups this year.

The popular Adopt-A-Highway program began in Michigan in 1990. Today, 35 years later, around 2,600 groups have adopted more than 6,000 miles of state highway. Last year alone, these volunteers collected more than 36,000 bags of trash.

Getting involved in Adopt-A-Highway is straightforward. Volunteers include members of civic groups, businesses and families. Crew members have to be at least 12 years old and each group must include at least three people. Groups are asked to adopt a section of highway for at least two years. There is no fee to participate. Adopt-A-Highway signs bearing group names are posted along the stretches of adopted highway.

When working in a highway right of way, Adopt-A-Highway volunteers wear high-visibility, yellow-green safety vests required by federal regulations. MDOT provides free vests and trash bags, and arranges to haul away the trash.

Sections of highway are available for adoption all over the state. Interested groups can get more information on joining the program at www.Michigan.gov/AdoptAHighway.

The year’s final Adopt-A-Highway pickup is scheduled for the fall, from Sept. 20 to 28.

Reprise: A veteran Michigan pollster talks about perceptions of road conditions and repairs

This week’s edition of the Talking Michigan Podcast features a reprise of a 2022 conversation with a veteran Michigan pollster about the public’s view of road conditions, repairs and funding.

A road with new pavement on a fall afternoon.

At the time, the pollster, Richard Czuba, talked about perceptions of improvements because of Gov. Whitmer’s Rebuilding Michigan program, which allowed MDOT officials to capitalize on a favorable bond market to rebuild many of the state’s busiest roads. The department leveraged debt to make vital improvements, but the need for a sustainable funding solution persists.
