AROUND THE STATE
Before the passage of Title IX in 1972, fewer than 300,000 females participated in athletics nationwide, according to the National Federation of State High School Associations. During the 2019-20 school year – the most recent not affected by the COVID-19 pandemic – nearly 76,000 girls competed in athletics in Michigan alone, filling more than 120,000 spots on teams for 750 high schools statewide.

Michigan high school football has been ripe for a fresh start after a COVID-rattled 2020 (and into 2021) season. Win or lose this past weekend, nearly 600 varsity football teams across the state should continue to have plenty to look forward to this fall – and of course, some have a few more reasons for early excitement.

Chartered flights and overnight stays for all away games are part of the normal routine for one northern Michigan high school’s student-athletes. Opportunities to make lots of new friends always come with the games too. That’s the norm for Beaver Island athletes representing the Lakers in soccer, volleyball and basketball while competing in the Northern Lights League.

More than 70 radio stations and web audio outlets have joined a growing list of Michigan High School Athletic Association Network affiliates for the 2021-22 school year, with more expected to come on board as fall sports schedules continue to build toward a busy September and October. Affiliates carry games and also the MHSAA Network radio show – “This Week in High School Sports” – which began its seventh season last week.

District 4 at Davison

PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Taylor Thompson-Grand Blanc.
INSIGHT: This is going to be a very tough district for Oxford going back into Genesee County after having an interesting experience last season but it will be at Davison and not at Grand Blanc. They should be one of the favorites in the White this season. The Wildcats have Miranda Wymenkio, Peyton Richter, Kayla Casper, Lily Morris, Brady Elling, and Lexie Yankee coming back for Coach Rachel Bryer. The Saginaw Valley League is one of the most toughest leagues in the state and three of those teams should be solid again. Davison is the host of the district and they bring with them a talented team although depth will be a question mark. The Cardinals should be solid led by Olivia Dirkse, Olivia Gean, Alora Sevenski, and Jasmine Hadley for Coach Craig Hitchcock. Grand Blanc won 12 games last season and should be the early favorite coming into the district. The Bobcats are loaded despite falling to Flushing in the regional semifinals last season. Grand Blanc has Taylor Thompson, Anayah Small, Rachel Gaydos, and Chelsea Bishop coming back for Coach Mike Thomas. Lapeer had a very young team last season but they should be improved this season. The Lightning have Paige Erla, among others coming back for Coach Mike Butterfield. Flint Kearsley should be an interesting team after missing out because of COVID-19 protocols last season. They could be a contender in the Flint Metro League. The Hornets had a young team last season for Coach Traci Pigott. This district looks to be a three team district but it’s anyone’s to take.
District 5 at Lake Orion

PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Sydney LaPrarie-Stoney Creek.
INSIGHT: This is shaping up to be a very interesting district at Lake Orion. Utica Eisenhower should be interesting to watch in the Macomb Area Red division this season. The Eagles has three solid players in Ava Stack, Jennifer McWerty, and Kaitlyn Woodcox coming back for Coach Clint Piper. Romeo should be interesting to watch in the Macomb Area Conference White. The Bulldogs have Cassidy Banich, Reese Carmondy, Amanda Kitchen, Sarah Ross, Nicole Mazur, and Megan Doyle for Coach Katy Bosheers. Rochester lost a ton of talent from last season but they have always been a solid program making the district finals the last two seasons. The Falcons have Natalie Rayce, Melina Troy, and Abbey Pleasant coming back for Coach Bill Thurston. Adams which had a coaching change this offseason should be interesting to watch. “We have a lot of work to do having lost such a great core of seniors last year and with the returning players having such limited opportunities to compete last season and the previous summer due to COVID-19 but they are working their tails off and doing it with enthusiasm so I believe we have the potential for rapid and significant improvement” said Coach Joe Malburg. The Highlanders have Madison Kessman, Abby Drahnak, AnJuyna Howard, Emma Klott, Samantha Blaine, Olivia Marcial, and Abby Skiff coming back for Malburg. Stoney Creek has a ton of proven experience along with Red experience. The Cougars have Sydney LaPrarie, Sarah LaPrarie, Mia Carson, Emily Flynn, Milana Skoric, Riley Binfet, Lily Solek, Ella Demertal, and Paris Kramer for Coach Kellen James. Lake Orion is an interesting team and is one of the favorites in the White. They are also loaded with Maddie Ebbert, Kylie Heck, Chloe Wiegers, Reagan Greene, Olivia Peplowski, and Audrey Wischmeyer for Coach Bob Brydges. The Dragons are without Katie Van Heck as she is out for the season with a torn ACL. This is shaping up for now being a four team district but two in reality but you never know.
District 6 at Waterford Kettering

INSIGHT: This district is an absolute mismatch on paper in Waterford. Waterford Kettering is going to be very interesting not only in this district but also in the Lakes Valley Conference. The Captains have a ton of experience in Markayla Holland, Amalia Vamvakitis, Savanagh Labo, Malayna Schoof, Graciela Lovett, Ellianna Ball, and Abby Hayward coming back for Coach George Yarberry. Waterford Mott had things very rough last season with virtually a very young group but they should be better this season. The Corsairs have Makyah Henderson, Abby Trombly, Kelsey Palmer, Madison Winters, among others coming back for Coach Michelle Sklar. Avondale should be very interesting to watch all season long as they could be a contender in the Blue. The Yellow Jackets really struggled last season. They should be better this season despite having major concerns when it comes to program strength and depth. Avondale has two transfers from Dayton, Ohio along with Reigan Lawrence, and Savannah Schmidt for Coach Roy Christmon. Pontiac did not field a team last season for Coach Christopher Wright so it will be interesting to see what the Phoenix have. The early favorite is Clarkston and it’s not even close. The Wolves whom won 15 games last season had a very interesting offseason which saw a coaching change but they kept it in house which helps when it comes to the transition. Clarkston has Maddy Skourpski, Izzy Hadley, Ava Hernandez, Kierra Tomlie, Sophia Walker, Emerson Wood, Mia Zorski, Emily Valenca, and Lena Eblencamp coming back for Coach Aaron Goodnough. This district is the Wolves to lose.
District 26 at Detroit Renaissance

INSIGHT: It was a great year for Detroit Renaissance getting back to the Division One State Finals before losing to Hudsonville. The Phoenix should be solid again not only in this district but in the Detroit Public School League as well. They have Azaria Huggins, Kiyla Brooks, Nevaeh Wood, Harmonie Bolton, Makayla Coleman, Marhea Bradshaw, Makayla Johnson, Christian Sanders, Imani Johnson, Nyana Pharr, and Aubrey Johnson coming back for Coach Shane Lawal. Detroit Mumford should be very interesting to see. The Mustangs had a strong team last season for Coach Kareem Hogan. Royal Oak lost a ton of talent last season. The Ravens Maddie Hines and Danica Schmidt coming back for Coach Brian Sopota. Both of them saw postseason experience after the entire varsity team was out because of COVID-19 last season. Berkley made the district finals last season and will look to have a repeat performance again. The Bears have Ashley Loon, Ava Beard, Aurora Sousanis, and Sammi Withrow coming back for Coach Kirk Carolan. Oak Park made the district finals last season but the Knights will have something in the works for Coach Peggy Evans-Carr. This district has Detroit Renaissance written all over it but keep an eye on Berkley and Royal Oak.
District 27 at Farmington Hills Mercy

INSIGHT: This is shaping up to be an interesting district at Farmington Hills Mercy and there are some interesting storylines. Farmington won nine games last season but they lost a ton of talent from last season. The Falcons have Autumn Bartlett coming back for Coach Laura Guzman. Southfield Arts and Tech is an interesting team to keep an eye on. The Warriors really struggled last season but they should have experience playing in the Red. They have Jalyn Austin coming back for Coach Shaquita Coltrane. Livonia Stevenson is going to be an interesting team to watch. The Spartans won 11 games last season and has a ton of experience returning which helps not only in the district but in the Kensington Lakes Activites Association as well. The Spartans have Kerry Donehue, Aubrie Ickes, Kaitlyn Wilmonth, Rachel Schornack, Gracie Shahu, Kalaia Jackson, Shea Hannigan, Jenna McWilliams, and Scarlett Webster coming back for Coach Kareem Smart. Redford Thurston should be very interesting despite winning six games last season. The Eagles have Skylar Tulloss and Marionna Greene coming back for Coach Bob Ostrowski. Farmington Hills Mercy won 14 games which included a district title over North Farmington whom is in another district last season. They fell to Detroit Renaissance in the regional finals and would like to get another shot at them again if it happens. The Marlins have home court in the district along with Francesca DeNardo, Grace Knittel, Carley Goebel, Sarah Cunningham, Ava Lorraine, Lauren Smiley, Maya White, and Sophia Dugas coming back for Coach Gary Morris. Farmington Hills Mercy is the early favorite but Livonia Stevenson and maybe Southfield Arts and Tech should have strong says.
District 28 at West Bloomfield

PLAYER ON THE SPOT: McKenzie Swanson-Birmingham Marian.
INSIGHT: This is going to be the toughest district in the State in my opinion. Birmingham Marian should the early favorite not only in this district but also in the Catholic League. They are the defending Catholic League Champs and went to the regional finals last season falling to Hartland. The Mustangs would like to get back to the regional but they know this is a very tough district. They are very talented with Sarah Sylvester, McKenzie Swanson, Isabella Prezzato, Anna Herberholz, Maria Hesano, Abigail Luchessi, Ellie Ervin, and Grace Rotter coming back for Coach Mary Ciceronne. West Bloomfield has a very talented group and should be the favorite in the Red. The Lakers have Sydney Hendrix, Kendall Hendrix, Mya Hooper, Indya Davis, and Summer Davis coming back for Coach Bert Mosley. West Bloomfield whom has home court missed out on the postseason because of COVID-19 protocols last season. Bloomfield Hills will be very interesting. The Blackhawks should be improved not only in the district but in the White as well. They have Amelia McCourt, Grace Main, Jessica Finney, and Ashley Forner coming back for Coach Kristen Massey. North Farmington is going to be very interesting as their boys and girls teams are in different districts. They should be much better despite winning six games last season. The Raiders have Sela Lefler, and Penelope Creary coming back for Coach Jeff Simpson. Seaholm should be very interesting. They are a darkhorse in the Blue this season. The Maples have Shay Manchester, Kate Sullivan, Clara Guffey, and Annie Boogren coming back for Coach Chris Manchester. Groves has gone through a ton of changes this offseason which could be very difficult. The Falcons have Jordan Peterson, Lily Gallagher, and Cira Racco coming back for Coach Allison Hidey. This should be a fun district as mentioned, there are plenty of good teams that are here in this district that’s for sure.
District 29 at Troy

PLAYER ON THE SPOT: Charlotte Sobotka-Troy.
INSIGHT: The regular season has been very kind to the Colts which earned them a trip to the Red this season but the big problem has been the postseason and this postseason is no different. Troy has had three years where they have not made it out of the first game (lost to Utica twice in the pre-district and Rochester in district semifinals last season however neither team is in this district.) They have home court which helps and have proven experience in Kendal Zeiter, Charlotte Sobotka, Alyssa Matuza (even though she’s out for the season-ACL,) Zoe Silver, and Mia Valiotis coming back for Coach Julius Porter. Troy Athens is a very interesting team to keep a close eye on. The Red Hawks are an interesting team not only in the White but the district as well. They have proven experience in Gillian Ciak, Ellie Musko, CeCe Fey, Aarushi Lockdale, Jordyn Doyle, and Skylar Emerson coming back for Coach Stacie Klumpp. Warren Woods Tower really struggled last season. They won four games despite being in the Macomb Area Conference Silver. The Titans have proven experience in Nikki Lavely, Corissa McCain, Arianna Jordan, and Delliah Mathews coming back for Coach Brian Socia. Warren Cousino even though they are not the same team when they won the Division One State title in 2018 when they had Kate McArthur they are still the Patriots. They are a sleeper in this district and for good reason. Warren Cousino won 11 games in the always tough and difficult Macomb Area Conference Red. The Patriots have a lot of proven experience in Kiara Williams, Twyla Parker, Ra’lyja Bridges, Julia Hopkins, Sydney Dixon, Mia Mixon, Emily Stevenson, Chloe Sakalas, and Jenna Smith coming back for Coach Amy Mitchell. It’s now or never for the Colts. That needs to be their mindset coming into the postseason but Troy Athens and Warren Cousino are going to be formitable opponents going forward.
District 58 at Birmingham Detroit Country Day

INSIGHT: This is not a strong district as people think. There are three teams that are in this district that did not field teams last season because of COVID-19 protocols. Birmingham Detroit Country Day had a great season winning 17 games with a very young team. They went to the MHSAA Division Two Semifinals however they fell to Newaygo and would like to get back to the Breslin Center this season. The Yellow Jackets have home court and will like to get back to the Breslin Center this season. They have Jaidyn Elam, Emma Arico, and Aysia Yokely coming back for second year coach Jerica Williams. Ferndale didn’t field a team last season and doesn’t have a new coach yet. Detroit Old Redford Academy didn’t field a team last season. Detroit Jalen Rose Academy didn’t field a team last season. Ferndale University fielded a team in their first year in the OAA. They are not afraid to play anyone. The Eagles had a program changing road victory at Avondale last season. They should be very interesting to see in the Blue and they could be Birmingham Detroit Country Day’s toughest challenger in the postseason. Ferndale University has some young proven talent coming back for Coach Desdan Hester. This district looks to be a mismatch on paper with Birmingham Detroit Country Day being the overwhelming favorite to move onto the regionals.

INSIGHT: This is shaping up to be an interesting district whomever hosts this district. Harper Woods Chandler Park Academy won 11 games last season and is deemed the favorite in this district for Coach David Mann. Detroit Osborn really struggled last season only winning two games for Coach Tenetia Pulliam. St. Clair Shores South Lake really struggled going 3-8 last season for Coach Wilbur Jones. Eastpointe won 10 games last season for Coach Daniel Kirkland. Detroit Denby won six games last season. The Tars have the majority of their team coming back for Coach Marnina Sullivan. Harper Woods won seven games last season. They are entering a new league being one of the favorites in the Blue. The Pioneers have Kendall Kelsey, Mya Duncan, Shatyra Harris, Clarita Childs, Clearia Peterson, and Destiny Bealey coming back for Coach Paul Allen. This should be an interesting district to say the least.

The Falcons have a new volleyball coach and it comes from their arch rival.
Groves named Madison Clouse as the new coach of the program. Clouse takes over for Jessica Prepolic whom stepped down in April.
Clouse was the junior varsity coach at Seaholm for the last three years and coached the 14 and under National Select Travel volleyball team.
“Coach Clouse is our new Varsity Volleyball Coach. While this is her first head coaching position she comes to us with a love and passion for volleyball. Her coaching philosophy is that a volleyball team should be composed of members who have the same goals in mind, to grow together, to have fun together, and ultimately win together. She is excited to continue her coaching journey at Groves High School” said Groves Athletic Director Tom Flynn in a press release.
Groves has a nice blend of youth and experience coming back in Lauren Brown, Lydia McKeever, Mara Chalifoux, Ava Kirchinger, Lauren Sample, Dajah Mines, Rebecca Apsey, and Heaven Harris which should help the transition period.
The Falcons will be in the White with West Bloomfield, Rochester, Avondale, North Farmington, Farmington, Berkley, and Royal Oak. They are in an interesting district at Troy Athens which features Troy Athens, Troy, Royal Oak, and Warren Mott.
Thoughts
This is an interesting hire to go to the arch rival for their new head coach. Clouse learned from two of the best minds in Heather and Jason Gambone. I think Clouse will do wonders at Groves. Program strength should be interesting to watch when it comes to the Falcons. They should have the talent to be a contender in the White this season.

The Falcons have a new girls basketball coach.
Groves named Alison Hidey as the program’s new head coach. Hidley takes over for Coach AntJuan Simpkins whom led the Falcons to their first ever district title last season.
Hidey brings a ton of experience to Beverly Hills as an assistant coach and a player. She spent 12 years as an assistant at Dearborn Divine Child. Hidey played college basketball at The University of Michigan-Dearborn.
Sara Liegey was named as an assistant for the program.
Hidey is the third coach in three years for Groves.
“Coach Hidey is our new Varsity Girls Basketball Coach. While this is her first varsity position she comes to us with years of experience as a player and a coach. She is a great addition to our coaching staff and we are excited to see what’s in store for our Girls Basketball program” said Groves Athletic Director Tom Flynn in a press release.
The Falcons went 7-8 in the regular season after playing a really difficult non league and Red schedule. Despite playing that type of schedule they fell to Detroit Renaissance in the regional semifinals last season.
It’s going interesting to see what happens but this move shows clearly that Groves is going a different direction.
The Falcons have a young nucleus coming back in Cira Racco, Anaya Robinson, Lily Gallagher, and Jordan Peterson.
Thoughts
This is a very interesting hire. Hidey brings a ton of experience but has never been a head coach. Hidey knows what it takes to get to the next level. It is going to take some time her and the players to adjust to each other.
Program strength is a major concern when looking at the Falcons especially in the sub-varsity levels. If Hidey can address this issue then I think the program will be in a much better place.
Being in the Red doesn’t help things especially with having to see Stoney Creek, West Bloomfield, Clarkston, Royal Oak, Southfield Arts and Tech, and Troy twice and that’s not mentioning districts yet.

Pontiac High School released some photos of their new multi field complex last week and it looks off the charts and awesome.
The new complex is located at Pontiac High School. The Phoenix played their games at Wisner Stadium but with the new multi field complex they will play their games on the new field.
The field which was grass is now field turf with light and dark green five yards out along with with purple endzones with the PONTIAC name on the north endzone and PHOENIX on the south endzone. There are lacrosse and soccer lines on the new field. The Phoenix logo is at the 50 yard line.
The track has not been finished as of yet or the lights, bleachers, and scoreboard. There will be a new track in the complex as well.
The new multi field complex has earned a ton of praise from other schools and brings a ton of optimism for the future of Pontiac athletics.
This is so awesome for the students and administration at Pontiac to play games on their new multi field complex. This is the start of something special in the works.

The Falcons boys basketball program will have a new coach this winter.
Farmington coach Terrance Porter tweeted on Twitter that he was stepping down coaching the program last week.
“I have officially resigned as the Head Boys Basketball Coach at Farmington HS. I want to thank the administration, community, and staff of Farmington for a great 11 years. I want to thank all the players for allowing me to coach you. Thank you to the many supportive parents” the tweet read.
Porter was 128-108 in his coaching career at Farmington.
Whomever leads the Falcons next season will have an experienced team back in Robert Davis and Prince Jackson even though there are rumors that Davis could leave Farmington like Jaden Akins did and play his senior season in prep school. The Falcons will be in the Red with the likes of Ferndale, Clarkston, West Bloomfield, Oak Park, North Farmington, and Adams. The district is not known as of yet.
Thoughts
Porter had a great career at Farmington. I’ll be curious who Athletic Director Tim Micklash goes with coaching the program. The Falcons are in a very tough spot heading into next season so it will be interesting to see what happens.

Hello everyone this is an opinion piece. The MHSAA has not released the girls and boys basketball district assignments as of yet. Hopefully they release them sometime this week. I made my very own district assignment projections to see where each school would be in for Divisions One and Two. I used the recent MHSAA 2021-2022 updated school division lists and also the volleyball districts since they are the likely indicator even though the league has not always followed the volleyball district path.
Here are my district projections for where I see each team. The MHSAA might and most likely do things differently. OAA schools are in caps. These are NOT the official district assignments. They will come out when the MHSAA releases the district assignments. Hopefully the MHSAA considers my district assignment projections.

INSIGHT: I went to Chicago Brothers Pizza in Lake Orion a few days ago to meet my good friend and owner Dan Brown and told him where his district looked like and he wasn’t happy and for good reason. This is as bad as it gets for Oxford having to go northwest into Genesee County for their district and not south with rivals Lake Orion and Clarkston. The Wildcats struggled a bit last season but they should be improved. They have Bryce Essman, Logan Rozanski, Alec Brown, and Mitchell Vivano coming back for Coach Steve Laidlaw and being a strong contender in the Blue this season. Looking at this district that features the defending Division One State Champs and the hosts whom should be very good after an offseason coaching transition. The Saginaw Valley League is going to be as tough as ever especially the Blue (South.) Grand Blanc has RJ Taylor, Ty Rogers, Bryce O’Mara, Kyle Deibis, Tae Boyd, among others coming back for Coach Michael Thomas. Davison won 11 games last season and could be Grand Blanc’s toughest challenger not only in the Saginaw Valley League but in this district as well. The Cardinals have Teon Armstrong, Jaylen Flowers, Erich Mullin, Landen Mullin, Jaxen Clark, Dane Coleman coming back along with newcomers James Cull and Jessie Cull for Coach Mike Williams. Williams comes to Davison from Flint Beecher where he led the Bucs to three State titles in Class C or Division Three. Lapeer is a very interesting team whom could be a spoiler come postseason time. They had a very good year winning eight games last season which included a upset of Davison. The Lightning have Jessie Johnston, Owen Hebbert, Zakery Olejniczak, Cole Bennett, Logan Dunbar, Brandan Pillar, Owen Boyle, and Kaleb Vanaman coming back for Coach Greg McGeary. Flint Kearsley won five games last season for Coach Paul Adas. The Hornets could be in the Flint Metro League title mix. It will be very interesting but it’s going to be a tough chore for Oxford especially with Davison and Grand Blanc having very strong teams and Lapeer is right in the mix with them.
District 5 at Romeo

INSIGHT: This is a very interesting district when looking at the teams. The early favorite is Adams with the move to play in the very tough Red this season. They had a strong year last season and will look to repeat and do better in a new division. The Highlanders have Justice Mims, Brady Prieskorn, Jon Ursuy, Peter Kardasis, Nick Paterra, and Jacob Durand for Coach Jaret Thomas. Lake Orion is in a very interesting spot being a strong contender in the White after sharing the Blue last season. The Dragons have Alden Ritt, Malachi Grandberry, CJ Witt, Trevor Witt, Jeff Perkowski, Blake Leidell, Nate Harvilla, and Brendan Smiley coming back for Coach Joel Schroeder. Rochester should be a darkhorse district contender. They certainly will be a contender in the Blue after winning the Gold last season. The Falcons are loaded in talent with Matt Stone, Preyston Schroyer, Connor Cracium, Aarman Hussaini, Gabe Mendoza, and Louis Bowes coming back for Coach Nick Evola. Stoney Creek lost a ton of talent last season but they have always had a solid program. The Cougars have Calvin Becker and Gage Beers coming back for Coach Steve Norgrove. Utica Eisenhower will be very interesting to watch. The Eagles have Braden Buza, Preston Crum, Jackson McHale, Ethan Barker, Matthew Elias, Kyle O’Reily, and Ethan Mychajulk for Coach Thomas Antishin in the Macomb Area Conference White. Romeo should be interesting to watch especially in the Macomb Area White and they have home court for the district. They have two proven veterans in Tim Kewley and Logan Rolfs but the Bulldogs have a young core in Matthew Plotz, Luke Rolfs, Aiden Tague, Josef Modlinski, Maxxium Quinn, and MaxQuire Quinn for Coach Marv Cushingberry. This district should very interesting to say the least.
District 6 at Waterford Mott

INSIGHT: This is a complete mismatch on paper when looking at the teams in this district. Waterford Mott is a very interesting team. They should be a Lakes Valley Conference contender and have home court for the district. The Corsairs have Eric Davis, Dajuantie Warren, Davon Warren, Juan Claudio, Kaleb Osborn, and Jake Konieczka for Coach Sean Moore. Waterford Kettering could be in some trouble this season. They lost a very talented player and one of the best to come out of Waterford Kettering in Bennie Krenshaw to graduation. Scoring is going to be a big time question mark. The Captains have some experience in Tommy Knibbs, Joe Acha, Brandon Wall, Trevor Donahue, Will Campbell, Zarek Zelinski, Chris Sanford, and Noah Khanuja coming back for Coach Michael Marek. Pontiac should be a very interesting team. They had lost three of four to close the season which cost them the Gold last season. They should be in the mix for the Gold this season. The Phoenix have Dioante Harris and Tyree Long coming back for Coach Dameon O’Neil. Avondale should be improved after a rough year last season. They could be a darkhorse in the Gold this season. The Yellow Jackets have Malik Adams, Abe Herra, Anthony Howard, Marshall Dennis, Aaris Gordon, Issac Gordon, and Darren Pagel coming back for Coach Pat Clancy. Clarkston should be the overwhelming favorite in this district and a possible darkhorse in the Red. The Wolves have a ton of experience in Keegan Waslik, Mike DePillo, Nathan Steinman, Desman Stephens, Zach Austin, and Brody Kosin coming back for Coach Tim Waslik. This district has blue and gold written all over it.

INSIGHT: This is shaping up to be a very interesting district at Royal Oak. Detroit University-Detroit Jesuit has to be the favorite and for good reason. They play in the always tough Catholic League and went to the regional finals last season where they fell in a tough one to Warren DeLaSalle. The Cubs have proven experience in Sonny Wilson, Charles Turner, Zavier Banks, among others coming back for Coach Pat Donnelly. Detroit Renaissance struggled in the Detroit Public School League despite making the district finals last season. They should be in the mix in the Detroit Public School League and in the district this season. The Phoenix has Juwan Massey and Donald Watts coming back for Coach John White this season. Oak Park has really improved which showed in the regular season which included a upset Clarkston. They made some mistakes in their really tough double overtime loss to Detroit University-Jesuit in the district semifinals last season. The Knights could be a darkhorse in the Red and in the district this season. Oak Park has a ton of proven experience in Bwada Miller, Ashton Henderson, and Derald Blackmon coming back for Coach Durand Sheppard. Royal Oak has really struggled with four straight losing seasons despite being in the Gold. The Ravens have proven experience in Dylan Hoffman, Camden Clark, Jackson Gilbert, Jessie Hoisington, and Colton Champion coming back for Coach Aaron Smith. Detroit Mumford should be interesting to keep close watch. The Mustangs won eight games for Coach Anthony White last season. Berkley lost a ton of experience from last season which normally is hard but not for the Bears. They have program strength with their junior varsity going unbeaten and their freshman program was not bad last season. This is the reason why they could be one of the favorites in the Blue this season for Coach Joe Sermo. This should be very interesting as mentioned to watch.

INSIGHT: This is shaping up to be an interesting district whomever hosts it. Livonia Stevenson is an interesting team to watch not only in the district but in the Kensington Lakes Activities Association East division as well. The Spartans won 13 games but lost a ton of experience last season. Livonia Stevenson has Joey Harper, Kenoly Jones, Zack Mikoncyzk, and Charles Asamoah coming back for Coach Eoghann Stephens. Redford Thurston struggled in 2020. They won five games last season but had a young group. The Eagles should be improved for Coach Brian Bates. Southfield Arts and Tech had things very rough winning five games last season but should be a contender in the Blue this season. They lost a ton of talent from last season which is very concerning. The Warriors have Craig Hayes coming back for Coach Darreyle Buchanan. Farmington took another offseason hit for the second straight season. They saw Coach Terrance Porter leave the program this offseason. The Falcons have Prince Jackson and Robert Davis coming back but they don’t have a new coach yet and to make things worse they are in the Red. It could be a very challenging season for Farmington. North Farmington is very interesting heading into this season. They should be the early favorite in this district and is a possible darkhorse in the Red. The Raiders missed out on the postseason because of COVID-19 protocols last season. North Farmington lost a ton of experience from last season but this is always been a program that always reloads with proven experience and coaching. The Raiders have Jasper Beeler, Landon Williams, PJ Gardner, and Aaron Rice coming back for Coach Todd Negoshian. This district should be very interesting to watch no matter whom hosts the district.

INSIGHT: This is shaping up to be a very interesting district at West Bloomfield which features two Catholic League teams, a Red, two White, and a Blue program in this district. Orchard Lake St. Marys is the early favorite because of the proven experience and the two players they brought into the school. They made the Division One State Quarterfinals falling to Grand Blanc which ended up winning the Division One State championship. This is a program that has a ton of expectations and this season is nothing different. The Eaglets have Kareem Rozier, Jack Crighton, Armon Rollins, Daniel Smythe, and DeCorion Temple coming back for Coach Todd Covert. They added newcomers Javaughn Hannah and Trey McKenny. Hannah comes to Orchard Lake St. Marys from Spire Academy in Ohio while McKenny played in the Flint area. Birmingham Brother Rice had a resurgence by winning eight games but they fell to Catholic League rival Warren DeLaSalle in the regional semifinals last season. The Warriors have a really talented team in Curtis Blackwell, Xavier Thomas, Henry Garrity, and John Blackwell coming back for Coach Ricky Palmer. Bloomfield Hills should the wildcard in this district because they are more than capable of beating someone in this district. The Blackhawks are one of the favorites in the White. They have Noah Adamcyzk, Derrick Lee, Carson Brodsky, Mohammad Farhani, Nash Gilbert, among others for Coach Phil Kurajian. West Bloomfield has home court and a very talented squad this season. The Lakers whom are in the Red have Mitchell Seay and Ryan Hurst for Coach Jeremy Dehna. Groves should be an interesting team in the White and this district. They almost beat Birmingham Brother Rice in the district final on their home floor last season. The Falcons have Aaron DuBose and Nick Lutz coming back for Coach Benny White. Seaholm could have some struggles in the Blue this season. They had their fair share of struggles last season. The Maples have John Chinonis coming back for Coach Mike DeGeeter. This district has fun written all over it.

INSIGHT: This is shaping up to be an interesting district at Troy with a White, a Blue, a Catholic League, and three Macomb Area Conference teams. The Colts lost a ton of talent from last season and is in the White. They have home court which should help things. Troy has Darius Whiteside coming back to help a very young team for Coach Gary Fralick. Warren DeLaSalle should be the favorite coming into this district. They are a possible sleeper in the Catholic League contending with the likes of Orchard Lake St. Marys, Birmingham Brother Rice, and Novi Detroit Catholic Central. The Pilots are loaded and talented after making the Division One State Semifinals falling to Ann Arbor Huron. They have Triston Nicols, Nino Smith, Jacob Yanachik, and Caleb Reese coming back for Coach Gjon Djokaj. Troy Athens is in a very interesting spot being a sleeper in the Blue and the district. The Red Hawks have Jonah Botardo, Christian Jemmona, Andre Shelton, and Jordan Sebaugh coming back for Coach Dave Scott. Warren Cousino had it very rough in which they won two games last season. The Patriots have Kobe Armstrong, Carson Dych, Julian Rice, Sha Preme Maki, Jacob Lifshay, Nick Rosati, and Justin Lifshay coming back for Coach Joe Kohl. Warren Woods Tower is an interesting team. They won six games last season. The Titans have Xzavion Allen, Corey Charleston, Christopher Kyles, Antuan Marsh, Cartier Whitaker, Jermaine Woods, and Stephen Young coming back for Coach Jason Henshaw. Warren Mott really struggled in 2021 by winning one game last season. The Marauders have Jayden Hardimen coming back for Coach Jeffery Olind. As mentioned, I think this is a three team district as we speak.

The Eagles should have a really strong season in the Red. They could have a deep postseason run again this season. Ferndale has Treyvon Lewis, Cameron Reed, Chris Williams, and Jason Drake coming back for Coach Juan Rickman. Ferndale University had a rough year despite not winning a game in the Gold in their first year in the OAA last season. The Eagles has proven experience in Semaj McGhee, Zach Sillah, Rasheed Jones, Aaron Tucker, Javon Sanders, and John King coming back. They don’t have a coach as of yet. It was a really down year for Birmingham Detroit Country Day in 2020. They won four games last season. The Yellow Jackets have a ton of proven experience in Kareem Aburashed and Julian Scott coming back for Coach Mike Bray along with home court for the district. Detroit Old Redford didn’t field a team last season. Detroit Jalen Rose Academy won four games last season for Coach Eugene North. This is looking like a three team district but Ferndale looks very good.

INSIGHT: This is not a strong district when looking at the teams at Eastpointe. Harper Woods Chandler Park Academy won 13 games but COVID-19 protocols derailed things and forced them to forfeit their regional final against Ferndale last season. They will have a new coach coming into the program this season but have always have had very strong teams. There are some questions surrounding the Eagles. Detroit Osborn had things very rough in 2021. They won one game last season for Coach Laurence Stewart. The Knights should be better this season. Eastpointe is a very interesting team in which they won 11 games last season. The Shamrocks will have a new coach and have home court this season. St. Clair Shores South Lake should be very interesting to keep an eye on. The Cavaliers won seven games last season for Coach Kurt Wilson. Detroit Denby should be improved after having a challenging season. The Tars won five games last season for Coach Kevin Woodmore. Harper Woods is in a very interesting spot coming into the OAA for their first season. They are expected to be a contender in the Gold. The Pioneers have Julian Young, DeAndre Williams, Marquise Kelly, Rozell Mathews, Isiah Lewis, and Quincy Dickinson coming back even though they will have a new coach. The Pioneers and the Eagles are going the teams to beat in this district.

INSIGHT: This is as bad as it for Oxford. The Wildcats despite having Bryce Essman, Logan Rozanski, Alec Brown, and Mitchell Vivano coming back for Coach Steve Laidlaw and being a strong contender in the Blue this season. Looking at this district that features the defending Division One State Champs and the hosts whom should be very good after an offseason coaching transition. The Saginaw Valley League is going to be as tough as ever especially the Blue (South.) Grand Blanc has RJ Taylor and Ty Rogers, among others coming back for Coach Michael Thomas. Davison has a ton of talent coming back themselves for Coach Mike Williams comes to Davison from Flint Beecher led the Bucs to three State titles in Class C or Division Three. Lapeer had a strong year with a very young group in 2021. The Lightning should be solid again for Coach Greg McGeary. Flint Kearsley won five games last season for Coach Paul Adas. The Hornets could be in the Flint Metro League title picture. It will be very interesting but it’s going to be a tough chore for Oxford especially with Davison and Grand Blanc having very strong teams and Lapeer is right in the mix with them.

INSIGHT: This is a very interesting district when looking at the teams. The early favorite is Adams with the move to play in the very tough Red this season. The Highlanders have Justice Mims, Brady Prieskorn, Jon Ursuy, Peter Kardasis, Nick Paterra, and Jacob Durand for Coach Jaret Thomas. Lake Orion is in an interesting spot being a strong contender in the White. The Dragons have Alden Ritt, Malachi Grandberry, CJ Witt, Trevor Witt, Jeff Perkowski, Blake Leidell, Nate Harvilla, and Brendan Smiley coming back for Coach Joel Schroeder. Rochester should contend in the Blue this season. The Falcons are loaded in talent with Matt Stone, Preyston Schroyer, Connor Cracium, Aarman Hussaini, Gabe Mendoza, and Louis Bowes coming back for new Coach Nick Evola. Stoney Creek lost a ton of talent last season but they have always been solid under Coach Steve Norgrove. The Cougars have Calvin Becker and Gage Beers that are back. Utica Eisenhower whom moves back to the Macomb Area Red will be very interesting to watch. The Eagles have Braden Buza, Preston Crum, Jackson McHale, Ethan Barker, Matthew Elias, Kyle O’Reily, and Ethan Mychajulk for Coach Thomas Antishin. Romeo should be interesting to watch. They have two proven veterans for Coach Marv Cushingberry in Tim Kewley and Logan Rolfs but the Bulldogs have a young core in Matthew Plotz, Luke Rolfs, Aiden Tague, Josef Modlinski, Maxxium Quinn, and MaxQuire Quinn. This district should very interesting to say the least.

INSIGHT: This is a complete mismatch on paper when looking at this district. Waterford Mott is very interesting where they could be in the mix in the Lakes Valley Conference and have home court. The Corsairs have Eric Davis, Dajuantie Warren, Davon Warren, Juan Claudio, Kaleb Osborn, and Jake Konieczka for Coach Sean Moore. Waterford Kettering has a ton questions this season. They lost Bennie Krenshaw to graduation. The Captains have Tommy Knibbs, Joe Acha, Brandon Wall, Trevor Donahue, Will Campbell, Zarek Zelinski, Chris Sanford, and Noah Khanuja back for Coach Michael Marek. Pontiac is very interesting. The Phoenix could be in the mix in the Gold and they have some experience that returns in Dioante Harris and Tyree Long for Coach Dameon O’Neil. Avondale should be improved this season and could be a darkhorse in the Gold. The Yellow Jackets have Malik Adams, Abe Herra, Anthony Howard, Marshall Dennis, Aaris Gordon, Issac Gordon, and Darren Pagel coming back for Coach Pat Clancy. Clarkston is the favorite in this district. The Wolves are in the Red and have a ton of experience coming back in Keegan Waslik, Mike DePillo, Nathan Steinman, Desman Stephens, Zach Austin, and Brody Kosin for Coach Tim Waslik. This district has blue and gold written all over it.

INSIGHT: This is shaping up to be a very interesting district at Royal Oak. Detroit University-Detroit Jesuit has to be the favorite and for good reason as they have experience and play in the always tough Catholic League. The Cubs have Sonny Wilson, Charles Turner, among others coming back for Coach Pat Donnelly. Detroit Renaissance struggled a bit in the Detroit Public School League despite making the district finals. The Phoenix should be in the mix for Coach John White this season. Oak Park is an interesting team as they could be a darkhorse in the Red and in the district. The Knights have proven experience in Bwada Miller, Ashton Henderson, and Derald Blackmon for Coach Durand Sheppard. Royal Oak whom has struggled recently. They should have high expectations despite being in the Gold this season. The Ravens have Dylan Hoffman, Camden Clark, Jackson Gilbert, Jessie Hoisington, and Colton Champion coming back for Coach Aaron Smith. Detroit Mumford should be interesting. The Mustangs won eight games for Coach Anthony White last season. Berkley lost a ton of experience last season. The Bears have program strength which is why they could be one of the favorites in the Blue this season for Coach Joe Sermo. This should be very interesting as mentioned to watch.

The Spartans lost a ton of talent last season but they have Joey Harper, Kenoly Jones, Zack Mikoncyzk, and Charles Asamoah coming back for Coach Eoghann Stephens. Redford Thurston won five games last season but they should be improved for Coach Brian Bates. Southfield Arts and Tech is very young this season and going to the Blue should help things. The Warriors have Craig Hayes coming back for Coach Darreyle Buchanan. Farmington which took another offseason hit for the second straight season could be in for a long season. The Falcons have Prince Jackson and Robert Davis coming back but they don’t have a new coach yet and to make things worse they are in the Red. North Farmington is very interesting. They could surprise some people in the Red and with the famous trap defense they could make some noise. The Raiders have Jasper Beeler, Landon Williams, PJ Gardner, and Aaron Rice for Coach Todd Negoshian. This district should be very interesting to watch no matter whom hosts the district.

INSIGHT: This is shaping up to be a very interesting district at West Bloomfield. There are two Catholic League teams, a Red, two White, and a Blue program in this district. Orchard Lake St. Marys is the early favorite because of experience and the two players that were added, one via transfer while the other is coming as a freshman. They made the Division One State Quarterfinals however falling to Grand Blanc this is a program that needs to bounce back in the worst way. The Eaglets have Kareem Rozier, Jack Crighton, Armon Rollins, Daniel Smythe, and DeCorion Temple, along with newcomers Javaughn Hannah, Trey McKenny for Coach Todd Covert. Birmingham Brother Rice had a resurgence but lost a tough one in the regional semifinals to Warren DeLaSalle last season. The Warriors have a really talented team in Curtis Blackwell, Xavier Thomas, Henry Garrity, and John Blackwell coming back for Coach Ricky Palmer. Bloomfield Hills is the X Factor as they are one of the favorites in the White and a spoiler. The Blackhawks have Noah Adamcyzk, Derrick Lee, Carson Brodsky, Mohammad Farhani, and Nash Gilbert among others for Coach Phil Kurajian. West Bloomfield whom is in the Red has a talented squad led by Mitchell Seay and Ryan Hurst for Coach Jeremy Dehna. Groves should be interesting not only in the district but in the White as well. The Falcons have Aaron DuBose and Nick Lutz coming back for Coach Benny White. Seaholm whom could have some struggles in the Blue this season. The Maples have John Chinonis coming back for Coach Mike DeGeeter. This district has fun written all over it.

The Pilots are loaded and talented after making the Division One State Semifinals falling to Ann Arbor Huron They have Triston Nicols, Nino Smith, and Caleb Reese coming back for Coach Gjon Djokaj. Troy Athens is in an interesting spot being a sleeper in the Blue and the district. The Red Hawks have Jonah Botardo, Christian Jemmona, Andre Shelton, and Jordan Sebaugh coming back for Coach Dave Scott. Warren Cousino had it rough last season in which they won two games last season. The Patriots have Kobe Armstrong, Carson Dych, Julian Rice, Sha Preme Maki, Jacob Lifshay, Nick Rosati, and Justin Lifshay coming back for Coach Joe Kohl. Warren Woods Tower won six games last season. The Titans have Xzavion Allen, Corey Charleston, Christopher Kyles, Antuan Marsh, Cartier Whitaker, Jermaine Woods, and Stephen Young coming back for Coach Jason Henshaw. Warren Mott really struggled winning one game last season for Coach Jeffery Olind. As mentioned, I think this is a three team district as we speak.

Ferndale went to the Division Two State Semifinals only to fall to Grand Rapids Catholic Central last season. The Eagles should have a really strong season in the Red and could have a deep postseason run again this season. Ferndale has Treyvon Lewis, Chris Williams, and Jason Drake for Coach Juan Rickman. Ferndale University had a rough year despite not winning a game in the OAA last season. The Eagles have a nice blend of talent in Semaj McGhee, Zach Sillah, Rasheed Jones, Aaron Tucker, Javon Sanders, and John King but they do not have a coach as of yet. It was a down year for Birmingham Detroit Country Day winning four games but they should be competitive for Coach Mike Bray. Detroit Old Redford didn’t field a team last season. Detroit Jalen Rose won four games last season for Coach Eugene North. This is looking like a three team district but Ferndale looks very good.

INSIGHT: This is going to be a tough district for Oxford going back into Genesee County after having an interesting experience last season. The Wildcats whom is one of the favorites in the White have Miranda Wymenkio, Peyton Richter, Kayla Casper, Lily Morris, Brady Elling, and Lexie Yankee coming back for Coach Rachel Bryer. The Saginaw Valley League is one of the most toughest leagues in the state and three of those teams should be solid again. Davison is the host of the district and they bring with them a talented team although depth will be a question mark. The Cardinals should be solid led by Olivia Dirkse and Jasmine Hadley for Coach Craig Hitchcock. Grand Blanc whom won 12 games last season is the favorite in the district. The Bobcats are loaded despite falling to Flushing in the regional semifinals last season. Grand Blanc has Taylor Thompson, Anayah Small, Rachel Gaydos, and Chelsea Bishop coming back for Coach Mike Thomas. Lapeer had a very young team last season but should be improved led by Paige Erla for Coach Mike Butterfield. Flint Kearsley should be interesting as they could be a contender in the Flint Metro League. The Hornets ha a young team last season for Coach Traci Pigott. This district looks to be a three team district but it’s anyone’s to take.

The Bulldogs have Cassidy Banich, Reese Carmondy, Amanda Kitchen, Sarah Ross, Nicole Mazur, and Megan Doyle for Coach Katy Bosheers. Rochester lost a ton of talent from last season but they have always been a solid program. The Falcons have Natalie Rayce, Melina Troy, and Abbey Pleasant coming back for Coach Bill Thurston. Adams which had a coaching change this offseason should be interesting to watch. The Highlanders have Madison Kessman, Abby Drahnak, AnJuyna Howard, Emma Klott, Samantha Blaine, Olivia Marcial, and Abby Skiff coming back for Coach Joe Malburg. Stoney Creek has a ton of proven experience along with Red experience. The Cougars have Sydney LaPrarie, Sarah LaPrarie, Mia Carson, Emily Flynn, Milana Skoric, Riley Binfet, Lily Solek, Ella Demertal, and Paris Kramer for Coach Kellen James. Lake Orion is an interesting team and is one of the favorites in the White. They are also loaded with Maddie Ebbert, Kylie Heck, Chloe Wiegers, Reagan Greene, Olivia Peplowski, and Audrey Wischmeyer for Coach Bob Brydges. The Dragons are without Katie Van Heck as she is out for the season with a torn ACL. This is shaping up for now being a three team district but two in reality but you never know.

INSIGHT: This district looks to be a mismatch on paper in Waterford. Waterford Kettering is going to be very interesting. The Captains have a ton of experience coming back in Markayla Holland, Amalia Vamvakitis, Savanagh Labo, Malayna Schoof, Graciela Lovett, Ellianna Ball, and Abby Hayward for Coach George Yarberry. Waterford Mott had things very rough but they should be better with more experience. The Corsairs have Makyah Henderson, Abby Trombly, Kelsey Palmer, Madison Winters, among others for Coach Michelle Sklar. Avondale should be very interesting to watch all season long as they could be a contender in the Gold. The Yellow Jackets really struggled last season however they should be better this season despite having major concerns. Avondale has two transfers from Dayton, Ohio along with Reigan Lawrence, and Savannah Schmidt for Coach Roy Christmon. Pontiac did not field a team last season for Coach Christopher Wright so it will be interesting to see what they have. The favorite is Clarkston and it’s not even close. The Wolves had an interesting offseason which saw a coaching change. Clarkston has Maddy Skourpski, Izzy Hadley, Ava Hernandez, Kierra Tomlie, Sophia Walker, Emerson Wood, Mia Zorski, Emily Valenca, and Lena Eblencamp for Coach Aaron Goodnough. This district is the Wolves to lose.

They have Azaria Huggins, Kiyla Brooks, Nevaeh Wood, Harmonie Bolton, Makayla Coleman, Marhea Bradshaw, Makayla Johnson, Christian Sanders, Imani Johnson, Nyana Pharr, and Aubrey Johnson coming back for Coach Shane Lawal. Detroit Mumford should be very interesting to see. The Mustangs had a strong team last season for Coach Kareem Hogan. Royal Oak lost a ton of talent last season. The Ravens Maddie Hines and Danica Schmidt coming back for Coach Brian Sopota. Both of them saw postseason experience after the entire varsity team was out because of COVID-19 last season. Berkley made the district finals last season and will look to have a repeat performance again. The Bears have Ashley Loon, Ava Beard, Aurora Sousanis, and Sammi Withrow coming back for Coach Kirk Carolan. Oak Park made the district finals last season but the Knights will have something in the works for Coach Peggy Evans-Carr. This district has Detroit Renaissance written all over it but keep an eye on Berkley and Royal Oak.

The Spartans have Kerry Donehue, Aubrie Ickes, Kaitlyn Wilmonth, Rachel Schornack, Gracie Shahu, Kalaia Jackson, Shea Hannigan, Jenna McWilliams, and Scarlett Webster coming back for Coach Kareem Smart. Redford Thurston should be interesting to watch. They won six games last season. The Eagles have Skylar Tulloss and Marionna Greene coming back for Coach Bob Ostrowski. Farmington Hills Mercy won 14 games last season falling to Detroit Renaissance in the regional finals. The Marlins have Francesca DeNardo, Grace Knittel, Carley Goebel, Sarah Cunnigham, Ava Lorraine, Lauren Smiley, Maya White, and Sophia Dugas coming back for Coach Gary Morris. This is shaping up to be an interesting district to see.

INSIGHT: This is going to be the toughest district in the State in my opinion especially with the teams that are in here at West Bloomfield. Birmingham Marian is the favorite in the Catholic League. The Mustangs are very talented as well with Sarah Sylvester, McKenzie Swanson, Isabella Prezzato, Anna Herberholz, Maria Hesano, Abigail Luchessi, Ellie Ervin, and Grace Rotter coming back for Coach Mary Ciceronne. West Bloomfield has a talented group which should be the favorite in the Red for Coach Bert Mosley. The Lakers have Sydney Hendrix, Kendall Hendrix, Mya Hooper, Indya Davis, and Summer Davis coming back after missing out on the postseason because of COVID-19 protocols last season. Bloomfield Hills will be very interesting to watch. The Blackhawks should be improved with Amelia McCourt, Grace Main, Jessica Finney, and Ashley Forner coming back for Coach Kristen Massey. North Farmington is going to be very interesting as their boys and girls teams are in different districts and they should be improved. The Raiders have Sela Lefler, and Penelope Creary coming back for Coach Jeff Simpson. Seaholm should be interesting to watch not only in the Gold but in the district as well. The Maples have Shay Manchester, Kate Sullivan, Clara Guffey, and Annie Boogren coming back for Coach Chris Manchester. Groves has gone through a ton of changes this offseason. They have Jordan Peterson, Lily Gallagher, and Cira Racco coming back for Coach Allison Hidey. This should be a fun district as mentioned, there are plenty of good teams that are here in this district that’s for sure.

INSIGHT: Are the Colts for real, this district looks very winnable for them after three disappointing postseason exits they have this district made for them to get to the regionals. Troy has home court and are loaded with talent in Kendal Zeiter, Charlotte Sobotka, Alyssa Matuza (even though she’s out for the season-ACL,) and Mia Valiotis coming back for Coach Julius Porter. Troy Athens should be the Colts biggest challenger in this district. The Red Hawks are loaded with Gillian Ciak, Ellie Musko, CeCe Fey, Aarushi Lockdale, Jordyn Doyle, and Skylar Emerson coming back for Coach Stacie Klumpp. Warren Woods Tower really struggled last season winning four games despite being in the Macomb Area Conference Silver division. The Titans have Nikki Lavely, Corissa McCain, Arianna Jordan, and Delliah Mathews coming back for Coach Brian Socia. Warren Cousino is a darkhorse to watch in this district. They won 11 games last season and is in the Macomb Area Conference Red division. The Patriots have some proven experience in Kiara Williams, Twyla Parker, Ra’lyja Bridges, Julia Hopkins, Sydney Dixon, Mia Mixon, Emily Stevenson, Chloe Sakalas, and Jenna Smith coming back for Coach Amy Mitchell. Troy has things made but better be careful of the Red Hawks and Patriots.

Birmingham Detroit Country Day had a great season going 17-3 last season and making it to the MHSAA Division Two Semifinals before falling to Newaygo. The Yellow Jackets have Jaidyn Elam, Emma Arico, and Aysia Yokely coming back for second year coach Jerica Williams. Ferndale did not field a team last season and are looking for a new coach. Detroit Old Redford Academy didn’t field a team last season. Detroit Jalen Rose Academy didn’t field a team last season. Ferndale University should be very interesting to watch. The Eagles have some talent coming back for Coach Desdan Hester. This district looks to be a mismatch on paper.

Harper Woods Chandler Park Academy won 11 games last season and is deemed the favorite in this district for Coach David Mann. Detroit Osborn really struggled last season only winning two games for Coach Tenetia Pulliam. St. Clair Shores South Lake really struggled going 3-8 last season for Coach Wilbur Jones. Eastpointe won 10 games last season for Coach Daniel Kirkland. Detroit Denby won six games last season. The Tars have the majority of their team coming back for Coach Marnina Sullivan. Harper Woods won seven games last season. They are entering a new league being one of the favorites in the Gold. The Pioneers have Kendall Kelsey, Mya Duncan, Shatyra Harris, Clarita Childs, Clearia Peterson, and Destiny Bealey coming back for Coach Paul Allen. This should be an interesting district to say the least.

Girls Volleyball Districts Are Out for 2021.

Hello everybody, the MHSAA released the districts for Girls Volleyball. Here are my early thoughts on each district and insight as well. Most districts are in Division One with the last one being in Division Two for the postseason.
Usually in the past the volleyball districts are the prelude to the basketball districts but it hasn’t always been the case.
Here they are. This blog will be updated periodically once we get updated information.
District 5 at Lakeland

INSIGHT: This is shaping up to be a very interesting district in White Lake. Clarkston should be the favorite in this district and is loaded for new coach in Alison Smith. The Wolves have Skylar Jidas, Elizabeth Adams, Kaitlyn Hoffman, Ella Post, Anna Kuebler, Cali Bordine, Sheeva Hajimirza, Kendall Lozzi, Emily Kuebler, McKenna Hempton, and Paige Giethbrock back from a team that went to the Division One state semifinals last season. Lakeland should be Clarkston’s toughest challenger in this district. The Eagles have Rachel Zurack, Eve Martin, and Julia Fledderjohn back for Coach Meghan Polce. Walled Lake Northern is an interesting team to watch. The Knights have Alyssa Bashir, Ava Epley, Olivia Bonkowski, Hannah Tims, Sarah Tims, Isabella Harding, Abby Zang, and Kayla Budziak back for Coach A’Jhanne Smith. Waterford Kettering has Emily Nuttall and Naomi Hilliard back for Coach Rod Armstrong. Holly should be the darkhorse in this district. The Bronchos lost a ton of experience from last season and will have a new coach. They have Delaney Jenkinson, Isabella Smith, Mary Grace McAninch, Selah Beeler, Marissa Walker, and Macy Martin coming back. This should be an interesting district to say the least as mentioned.

INSIGHT: This is shaping up to be an interesting district that has two OAA teams, two Lakes Valley League teams, and a Kensington Lakes Activities Association team. West Bloomfield has a new volleyball coach in Nancy McKowen. McKowen has Kalin McCoury, Cara Hartley, Lily Wardle, Paige Geiser, Marissa Bovo, Kate Horvath, Kennedy Knox, Arianna Hood, Nicole Albani, and Nadia Smith back. There is some experience but the coaching transition will have to happen during the season which will be a challenge for the Lakers. The early favorite in this district is Novi. The Wildcats have a few players coming back in Grace Dziedzic, Ally Sharnowski, Charlotte Stoy, Sarah Calanchi, Lauren Trainor, Rachel Karr, Reganne Bennett, Sarah Vellucci, and Katie Harpenau. They had a deep postseason run getting to the Division One State semifinals last season for Coach Kacy Bryon. North Farmington has Amelia Scarchilli, Giseele Kassab, Charlotte Warner, Erica Fetterman, Jenna Lee, Maya Weisberger, Emma Berlanger, Nyla Peter-Koyi, Grace Garrett, and Mary Dadisho coming back for Coach Michael Love. Walled Lake Central should be an interesting team to watch with Dru LeValley, Ella Sechrist, Kate LeValley, Gabbi Hajji, Mya Arafat, Alison Karana, Ava Wojciechowski, and Ashlyn Campbell back for Coach Sarah Schmidt. Walled Lake Western has Julia Orando, Alyssa Samp, Jordan Baetz, Kylie Dickinson, and Ryah Dewey back for Coach Gino Salciccori. Novi is the early favorite as mentioned but this is the gray court of West Bloomfield and upsets have happened in the past.

INSIGHT: This is shaping up to be an interesting district especially when there are two Catholic League powers that met three times last season (regional final) and they could very much meet again three times this season with both teams being in the same district which is very odd for volleyball standards. Birmingham Marian won the Division One State Championship last season. They are loaded again and have home court for the district this season. The Mustangs have a ton of experience in Sarah Sylvester, Ava Brizard, Ava Sarafa, Sophia Treder, McKenzie Swanson, and Lauren Heming coming back for Coach Mayssa Cook. Farmington Hills Mercy has Ella Shelds, Erin Kline, Leah LaFontaine, Amina Robinson, Liz Kitchen, Lauren Smiley, and Lauren Mullan. Back for Coach Loretta Vogel. The Marlins are coming off a very tough loss to the Mustangs in the regional finals last season. Seaholm whom could be a darkhorse if things go right has a ton of experience coming back in Audrey Brown, Makena Justice, Maggie Liebler, Ella Stangland, Katie Sullivan, Jessie Rebock, Jordan Lindner, Sydney Ryan, Lily Fischer, Katrina Ness, and Makayla Bolnick for Coaches Jason and Heather Gambone. Farmington has some questions after losing a ton of talent from last season for Coach Kate Drews. Bloomfield Hills has Lauren Chioini, Hannah Teer, Ava Petrucci, Grace Siepierski, Danielle Rasi, Alex Voss, Ashlea Nwabueze, and Gabrielle Jefferies for Coach Larry Wyatt. I don’t see anyone beating the Catholic League powers unless they are in the same side of the bracket then anything is possible.
District 8 at Oxford

INSIGHT: This should be an interesting district that features a couple of powerhouse programs. Adams has been very successful as of late making deep district postseason runs despite being in a district with Stoney Creek and Utica Eisenhower. The Highlanders run has ended in districts with Stoney Creek and Utica Eisenhower but the MHSAA moved Adams to another district. Adams beat the Dragons and the Wildcats in the regular season last year which should give them some confidence. The Highlanders have Jenna Jenkins, Rosalia Simon, Jacoby Fylnn, Ella Pease, Alyssa Edwards, Nikitha Srikrisha, and Gracie Teolis for Coach Terry Baughman. Lake Orion has proven postseason experience despite falling to Clarkston in the district finals last season. The Dragons have Nina Horning, Hannah Lynch, Anna Wandrie, Lauren Peters, Kara Delventhal, Piper Talaga, Anja Roedenback, Kayla Chen, Mandy Knieper, Malinda Brunk, and Jada McCauley back for Coach Tony Scavarda. Avondale is an interesting team despite really struggling last season. The Yellow Jackets have Emily Beckas, Anna Lubman, Ariyana Ingall, Laila Hammond, Madison Grenier, and Marissa Zoller back for Coach Andrew Stepp. Oxford is an interesting team to watch and they are at the Ian Smith Gym which helps a lot. The Wildcats have been a proven power and have improved each season. Oxford has Raegan Bell, Baylee Proctor, Ava Wiscombe, Ashley Horne, Rachel Townsend, Carleigh Turek, Margaret Feltz, Kealey Kolp, and Paige Hasselbring back for Coach Brian Kim. Pontiac struggled last season and they could very well do so again. Waterford Mott has struggled in the Lakes Valley Conference. The Corsairs have Sophia Vue, Dylan Chamberlian, and Kinsley Lamb back for Coach Kirk Bagg. I’m seeing this district right now being a three team district but could be a four teamer if things work out in someone’s direction.

INSIGHT: This is shaping up to be a very interesting district in Wayne County. The early favorite has to be Berkley in which they shocked a ton of experts. Coach Eric Wachterhauser has done a remarkable job turning the program around in his first season coaching the program. Wachterhauser is looking for more in his second year. Berkley has a ton of experience from their district championship team which won their first crown since 2012. The Bears have Hannah Roddis, Jordan Budzinski, Sawyer Jones, Claire Leonard, Ella Schneider, Ava Beard, Ariel Gibson, Sammi Withrow, Sophia Dawkins, Lily Keefe, Skylar Walter, and Amayah Watkins to give them that experience. Detroit Renaissance should be the Bears toughest challenger in this district. The Phoenix fell to Berkley in the district finals last season. Detroit Renaissance should be a team to watch with Summer Hutchins, Mackenzie Flowers, Trinity Loundmon, Mackenzie Jarvis, Sydney Hall, Lauren Greene, Keiana Burr, and Brooklyn Jones back for Coach Louis Mitchell. Southfield Arts and Tech and Oak Park did not field teams last season. Warren Fitzgerald was decent despite being in the Macomb Area Conference Bronze last season. Detroit Mumford really struggled and could do so again this season. As of right now this looks to be a two team district between Berkley and Detroit Renaissance.

INSIGHT: This is shaping up to be an interesting district over on Tienken and Sheldon Road which features two Oakland County teams, two Macomb County teams, and two St. Clair County teams. Stoney Creek has to be the early favorite because of the talent they have coming back and home court as well. The Cougars have Sydney Tomlak, Kierra Shanahan, Tiffany Tang, Lucie Hranacova, Kathleen Brown, Sydney Bell, and Grace Lombardo coming back for Coach Ross Talbott. Port Huron comes into this district after being with New Baltimore Anchor Bay and Macomb Dakota for a long while. They shared the Macomb Area Blue title last season with Utica Ford II. The Big Reds have Julia Gilbert, Mia Jacobs, Lainey Lochota, and Ella Jacobs coming back back for Coach Derek Arena. Rochester made some noise in the postseason. They upset Romeo in the district semifinals but fell to Utica Eisenhower in the district finals. The Falcons have Leah Stone, Abigail Carballo, Marissa Gallagher, Maddie Nikolic, Lilly Pratt, and Jasmine Savoi coming back for Coach Kirk Gibbs. Utica Eisenhower lost two really talented players who were all state from last season’s district championship team. The Eagles have Ava Wolfe, Izzy Biermann, Gianna Jakubowski, Nina Tabaka, Santa Kalaj, Katie Smith, and Santina Fioritto coming back for Coach Kaitlyn LaPratt. Romeo had a decent season last year and will look to be better. The Bulldogs have Trista Ameel, Caitlyn Jaskowski, Cassidy Banach, Ella Lackowski and Elizabeth Fowler back for Coach Stacey Williams. Port Huron Northern whom is a newcomer to this district struggled last season. The Huskies should be better this season. They have Allison Caughel, Kylie Guyette, Hailey Guilloz, Marley Patterson, Abby Landschoot, Lilly Knowlton, Cooper Manuillow, Jersey McHregor, Madison Palmer, and Anna Kerhoulas back for Coach Randi Kaufmann. This district is looking very interesting to keep an eye on for sure.

INSIGHT: This is shaping up to be an interesting district with a ton of storylines coming into the season and once the postseason starts. Groves has a blend of youth and experience with Lauren Brown, Lydia McKeever, Mara Chalifoux, Ava Kirchinger, Lauren Sample, Dajah Mines, Becca Apsey, and Heaven Harris back for new coach Madison Clouse. Troy has some questions but never count out a Coach Tom Viligant squad. The Colts have Savannah Baranowski, Aliya Walters, Tessa Johansson, Sam Watson, Alvina Zaitona, Lauren Boehmer, and Lindsey Van Buhler back. Warren Mott had a great year making it to the district semifinals before falling to Berkley in the district semifinals last season. The Marauders should be a player this season in the Macomb Area Silver for Coach Camisha Coleman. Troy Athens should be an interesting team to watchas they have home court. The Red Hawks has proven experience in Madison Kinsman, Gillian Ciak, Alexa Withun, Anneliese Schriber, Ally Moscone, Casey Gruber, and Nya Mays back for Coach Jeff Williams. Royal Oak should be interesting to see as Coach Ciara Schultz has done well heading into her third season with the Ravens. This is shaping up as mentioned to be an interesting district to keep an eye on for sure.

Birmingham Detroit Country Day looks to be the favorite with whom they have back along with the proven postseason experience. The Yellow Jackets have three all state players in Nyla Muskovin, Morgan Lockhart and Serena Nyambio for Coach Kim Lockhart. Ferndale should be Birmingham Detroit Country Day’s toughest challenger in this district. The Eagles have some district championship experience of their own in Emily Foster. Foster has done really well in her career for Coach Stella Johnstone. Hazel Park is another interesting team to watch. The Vikings have some talent and are well coached under Coach Sherry Rietz. I don’t expect much from Ferndale University or Detroit Pershing in this district but you never know. The Eagles are well coached under Julie Patterson despite the struggles. It will be interesting to see if Ferndale University will make some noise. I see this district for now being a two team district.
