This was a shocker that came out of no where.

According to Twitter, Lakers Football Coach Tyrice Grice has stepped down coaching at West Bloomfield.

“Dear Laker Nation, I have decided to retire as head football coach at West Bloomfield High School effective immediately. I wish my players, coaches, staff, and players nothing but the best. L-Boys you will be missed. Coach Grice” Grice tweeted out.

Grice was the defensive coordinator for the Lakers 2020 Division One State title team. He took over the head coaching job when then coach Ron Bellamy left for Ann Arbor to be on Coach Jim Harbaugh’s staff in 2021.

The Lakers went 18-4 in his two years coaching. They made the postseason in each of his two years and has won or shared the Red in both seasons.

He spent 13 years at West Bloomfield and 28 years overall.

According to MLive’s Jared Purcell he said that the reason why Grice was leaving the program was that he took a job at an insurance company in Houston, Texas and that his new job was forcing him to leave coaching and the State.

Whoever the new coach will be next season will have some proven experience. The Lakers have Requan Nance coming back at quarterback along with Kari Jackson at linebacker and Brandon Davis-Swan and Zander Davis up front along with Jaiden Allos at running back along with Jamir Benjamin and Bryce Rowe in the defensive secondary. Program strength is also solid as well for West Bloomfield.

It will be very interesting to see what the Lakers do with their coaching search this offseason. Grice was an in house hire when he took over for Bellamy and it worked out very well. Could Athletic Director Eric Pierce go that route again???

It is something to keep a very close eye on.

Stay tuned to OAA Now for the latest on this developing story.

Here is the Tweet confirming the move.

MDHHS observes American Heart Month this February
Implementing tools and techniques can lower risk

LANSING, Mich. – Heart disease is the leading cause of death of women in the United States and in Michigan, causing about one in five deaths in 2020. In recognition of American Heart Month and the American Heart Association’s Go Red™ for Women campaign, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) WISEWOMAN program and Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Unit are working together to raise awareness of heart health.

“The best way to protect against heart disease is to prioritize heart health by developing and maintaining healthy habits,” said Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian, MDHHS chief medical executive. “Michigan residents can do this by being aware of their individual risk factors and leading a heart-healthy lifestyle, which includes seeing their doctor for routine visits, not smoking, eating a healthy diet and getting regular exercise.”

Between 2019 and 2020, mortality rates due to heart disease increased nearly 2% among white non-Hispanic women, more than 8% among Hispanic women and nearly 10% among Black non-Hispanic women ages 25 and older nationwide. Although women are disproportionately impacted, heart disease can affect people of any age, gender, race or ethnicity.

Most cardiovascular diseases can be prevented by implementing lifestyle changes, including:

  • Not smoking and avoiding exposure to secondhand smoke.
  • Engaging in regular physical
  • Eating a balanced diet.
  • Managing healthy blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels.
  • Achieving and maintaining a healthy weight.

Both the WISEWOMAN program and the Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Unit work to increase awareness of the risk factors for heart disease, high blood pressure and stroke through the work of the Michigan Million Hearts® Network. Million Hearts® 2027 — a national initiative to prevent 1 million heart attacks and strokes co-led by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The Million Hearts Initiative collaborated with the CDC Foundation to develop the “Live to the Beat” campaign.

Women should talk with their health care providers about their health including any risk factors they may have for cardiovascular disease. For information on risk factors as well as signs and symptoms of cardiovascular disease, visit Go Red for Women. For more information about the WISEWOMAN program, call 844-446-8727.

AG Nessel Warns Residents of Common Romance Scams

LANSING – Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is reissuing her Romance Scams Consumer Alert in advance of Valentines Day, to educate residents on common scams found on social media and dating platforms.

“It is imperative that you always exercise caution with what you share online and never send money or sensitive data to someone you have not met in person,” said Nessel.

Online romance scams take advantage of people looking for romantic partners on dating sites, apps, or social media. The con artists quickly profess their love for their victim and often claim to be in the military or working abroad to explain why they are unable to meet in person.

Here are some tips for avoiding romance scams:

  • Use reverse image search websites like TinEye and Google Images to see if their image shows up somewhere else
  • Never agree to open a bank account, or re-ship goods they send to you
  • Don’t send money, prepaid gift cards, or cryptocurrency to someone you met online
  • Communicate only through the specific app and avoid giving out personal phone numbers or email addresses
  • If someone appears on your social media and rushes you to start a friendship or romance, slow down and talk to someone you trust before responding

For more information about popular consumer scams, or if you believe you’ve been a victim, residents can contact the Consumer Protection Department Monday-Friday at 877-765-8388 or complete our online complaint form.

Governor Whitmer Statement on MSU Shooting

Governor pledges support to impacted families and community, lowers flags statewide

LANSING, Mich. — Governor Gretchen Whitmer issued the following statement on the deadly shooting at Michigan State University.

“Our Spartan community and Michiganders across the state are devastated.

“MSU’s campus is a special place for so many, and it is now the site of another senseless act of gun violence. Parents across Michigan were on pins and needles calling their kids to check in on them and tell them they love them.

“It doesn’t have to be this way.

“Certain places are supposed to be about community, learning, or joy—elementary schools and college campuses, movie theaters and dance halls, grocery stores and workplaces. They should not be the sites of bloodshed.

“This is a uniquely American problem. Too many of us scan rooms for exits when we enter them. We plan who that last text or call would go to. We should not, we cannot, accept living like this.

“I want to thank the first responders for their swift actions on the ground tonight and the medical professionals who are working to save lives.

“Spartans will cry and hold each other a little closer. We will mourn the loss of beautiful souls and pray for those fighting for their lives in the hospital.”

Gov. Whitmer Lowers Flags After MSU Shooting

LANSING, Mich. — Governor Gretchen Whitmer has ordered U.S. and Michigan flags within the State Capitol Complex and upon all public buildings and grounds across the state of Michigan to be lowered to half-staff immediately on Tuesday, February 14 until further notice to honor and remember the victims of the shooting at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan.

“The whole state of Michigan is wrapping its arms around the Spartan community today,” said Governor Whitmer. “MSU’s campus is a special place for so many that is now the site of a tragic and senseless act of violence. I’m heartbroken for the victims and every student, parent, faculty, and MSU staff member affected by last night’s events. I want to thank law enforcement, first responders, and medical professionals for acting quickly to protect campus and save lives. We must work together to end this gun violence that claims the lives of too many Americans and upends the lives of countless others every day.”

The State of Michigan remembers the victims and stands in solidarity with the Spartan community by lowering flags to half-staff. Michigan residents, businesses, schools, local governments, and other organizations are encouraged to display the flag at half-staff.

To lower flags to half-staff, flags should be hoisted first to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff position. The process is reversed before the flag is lowered for the day.

Flags should remain lowered until further notice.
